Player names

I updated some player names in the files names.txt and first_names.txt in the folder OOTP21\data\database. I basically updated the Dutch first and last names with more accurate data. In the process some new names were added and some old names removed.

I then loaded an old save (no players created in this save) and filled all the teams with fictional (Dutch) players. I found that some created players still were given names that were removed from the names.txt file. Anybody know why this is? Should I change/remove some files from the saved game in the saved_games folder? I notice there is a names.dat and a players.dat file in the saved games folder.

When I start a new game and fill the teams with fictional players I can not find any names anymore that were removed.

Actually the game still generates names that were removed. In the new league I started I found 2 old first names. See attached picture. The names Gjelt and Kiril were removed from the first_names.txt file, see excerpts from this file in the picture. Red line shows were these names should be in the file (alphabettical order)

I am sure these names are gone from the file. I updated the file using Excel and when searching in the Excel file these names are not found. But somehow the game still generated these names? What am I missing?

Just trying to understand how this works. I thought player names were created from the two text files, names.txt and first_names.txt in the database folder.
But apparently this is not the case.

Can anybody explain to me how it actually works?

Hey Dutch,

I’m not sure how much help I can really offer but I completely understand being stumped by an OOTP problem without getting any feedback. In OOTP 20 I tried to create a more accurate 19th century name set because to me this is the one of the biggest immersion killers of the game for me. Anyway, what I learned was that if you are using the steam version of the game certain files are re-downloaded every time you start a game erasing any changes the user made. I think it a safety feature to stop the user from making any damage that couldn’t be repaired. I could be completely wrong here. It has been some time since I dug around the nameset file. My attempt at making my own nameset didn’t work out and I put that project on hold. I hope this at least gives you an option to think about. Good luck

To clarify, I do not use Steam. I downloaded the PC version directly from this website.

Maybe the mod sub forum? I don't see too much discussion in general about changing files. Basically depends if the modders happen to also read general every day.

good luck

Did you re-import the Name and Ethnicity database before generating the new players in the old saved league? It is possible that the saved game was still using the original name files.

It is found under Game Settings --> Database, and then in the Database Tools dropdown you can re-import various data files.

Good advice... I'm sure Joe from Chicago would know the answer.

Here is the Names sub forum link:

That appears to be the issue. After re-importing the database names seem according the new files. Thanks!

Yeah, that's a necessary step. Otherwise, the game will continue to use the old versions of the names files.

Also, I encourage you to post your Dutch names files to the names/nations subforum.
