Prospect Game - Timmy KGB

Timmy KGB (His father was Teddy from Rounders) was taken first overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 1997 Draft, ahead of JD Drew. The versatile player can be a RHB starter in the MLB, as well as a solid shortstop with a good bat. His ceiling is incredible and while his current ratings in most areas are merely solid he does project to start in the majors.

He barely had time to appreciate his life changing 1,716,000 signing bonus when he was dealt to the Florida Marlins for SS Edgar Renteria and four other players. The Marlins are coming off a world series loss to the Seattle Mariners and are hoping the prospect can contribute immediately to a team with decent chances at getting back there.

The Marlins appear to be all-in on this season having dealt 5 players and 3 draft picks including a first overall to Seattle for a 28 year old Ken Griffey Jr. They dealt their 2nd pick as well, picking up young starter Kerry Wood in a swap that included Rick Helling and just enough cash to make the trade go through.

They've also made some reliever swaps where they supplemented young talent with late round picks for win now pitchers.

They've tried to get younger at starter, dealing 3 high picks and LHP Al Leitner for LHP Mike Hampton. The Marlins even deal 5 middle picks and SP Kevin Brown to the Yankees for Andy Pettite.

Several outfield trades later involving gutting the organizations draft and we're almost ready for spring.

It's not clear how all these trades shaking up the team and depleting their draft next year will impact the club but with Timmy KGB the future seems bright.

Position Battles this Spring:

Livan Hernandez and Kerry Wood look to be on the outside looking in in the battle for the 5th starting spot.

Greg Zaun looks to be potentially losing the backup catcher battle to JD Closser. Ryan Robertson has an outside shot.

The signing of Jeff King looks to demote Brian Daubach to AAA. He doesn't have a clear spot on the roster as 1B+RF doesn't fit with our non-primary players. F P Santangelo looks similarly unassailable at 2B.

Chris Clapinski plays the whole infield in addition to an outfield position and will look to make the team as a backup behind Robin Ventura.

Dave Berg and Ralph Millard will battle it out for the shortstop position on days when Timmy KGB sits or pitches.

Richard Hildalgo and Trot Nixon will be battling for spots on the roster. The question is will we run 5 outfielders to have both of them up in the bigs. The starting positions in OF look unassailable as Cliff Floyd, Ken Griffey Jr and Gary Sheffield look incredibly strong from a tools perspective.

First Spring Win

We took on the LAD in Spring Training with Timmy KGB getting the start.

He went 4 innings before getting pulled on pitch count. Those 4 innings were pretty solid, 1 Hit (a single), 0ER, 0BB, 10K. He had one plate appearance getting a sac bunt before Sheffield pinch hit for him in the 5th.

In a weird statistical aberration, Timmy KGB earned a win, and an extensive number of pitchers on his team earned holds despite leaving the game 1-0 and winning 5-2!

J Powell pitched the 9th inning for a save.

First Spring Loss for Team

Timmy KGB went 5 innings at SS for the team before being pinch hit for by A Gonzalez.

He was 0 for 2 with a BB in 3 plate appearances. He also had a stolen base to go with that walk. He was error free in the field.

The final score was 6-4 with M Magnante getting the loss and blown save.

Fernandez, Osuna, Rhodes and Dempster pitched 0.00 ERA today, with Rhodes earning a Hold.

Asides from Helling getting hit for 9.00 ERA, the remainder of the Cubs pitchers were ERA free.

Smallball was the order of the day as Chicago scored 6 from 9 singles and doubles, and 5 walks.

1-2 This Spring

The SF Giants raised hell in the first with a 4-run inning. That was all the scoring for the entire game, as the Marlins went to 1-2 with the 4-0 loss.

Pettite gets his first loss for spring training and starts with a 6.75 ERA. Botalico, Percival, and Saunders had 0 ERA performances in the loss.

Kiefer got his first win of spring training while Beck earned a save. Cornelius went 3 innings and Arocha went 1.1 but strangely neither was credited with a hold.

Timmy KGB PH in the 8th going 0-1 and played error free ball at SS in the 9th. The young prospect is trying not to worry about a small number of at bats but is not happy about batting .000 with a 0.250 OBP so far this spring.

2-2 This Spring

Timmy KGB went 1-3 getting his first hit (a double) and first run. No stolen base this time, but his BA is heading in the right direction even if its only .167. One of his at bats was painful as he left 2 runners in scoring position when he batted with two outs. Fortunately, those runs didn't matter. Timmy KGB continued his error free run at Shortstop and even made a highlight reel play on a ground ball today.

Florida won 7-1 with Hampton getting a 2.25 ERA win. Christiansen, Lilly, Rhodes, Osuna and Powell also pitched 0.00 ERA ball but only Christiansen and Osuna got credit for their holds.

2-3 This Spring

Timmy KGB started at 3B and played till the 7th when he was pinch hit for by D. Berg. He went 1-2 with his first HR of spring training. He had 2 runs for the game, reaching on an S. Halter error before stealing 2nd and 3rd with the other at bat. Average improves to .250 continuing its steady march towards good. He's already well above the Mendoza line, and he can contribute spectacularly with his speed in all areas of the game and a world class glove and arm.

Unfortunately his 2 RBI, 2 Run performance was overshadowed as Pittsburgh took the game 7-12.

The pitching was really ugly as Hernandez was pulled early after 3.1 innings having given up 6 runs (5 earned). He was a little unlucky about clustering as normally giving up 7 hits and 2BB wouldn't be quite that painful. Reynoso came in next and brought his spring ERA to 36.00 giving up 4 earned runs in the 4 inning he lasted. Wright and Lowe pitched some ERA free ball while Saunders went 1.1 innings giving up 2 runs.

Schmidt got the win for Pittsburgh in a 4 inning 2.25 ERA performance, although the relief pitching got hit pretty hard. Rincon faced 1 batter for a save with a 5 run lead.

3-3 This Spring

Timmy KGB pinch hit for D.Berg in the 8th before playing error free at shortstop. He was 1-1 with a solo homer. His average improves to a solid .333 and his power is quite impressive as his 3 hits so far are 2HR and a double.

Saunders faced 1 batter in a 0.00 ERA win. Well Heredia got a hold and Alfonseca finished the game without a save.

Wood had 2 ER in 4 innings to start the game, while the remaining pitchers had 0.00 ERA. Dempster filled in for 2.2 innings before Saunders could get the win and was hit by pitch in his at bat.

Butler on Arizona has a rather dubious infinite ERA giving up 3 ER and eliminating 0 batters before getting pulled. Norris went 2 innings with a blown save.

Final score 6-2.

3-4 This Spring

Timmy KGB went 4 innings before getting removed on pitch count. He was impressive scattering 2 hits, and 9 Ks with 0BB. He was 0-1 at the plate.

Unfortunately Magnante was shellacked for 4 ER while getting only 1 batter out. His ERA is 32.40 for Spring Training. J Wright got awarded the loss as giving up 2 ER in 1.1 innings pitched brought their Spring ERA up to 4.91. Lilly was also suspect giving up 3 ER while only getting 2 outs. Rhodes and Nen also pitched, getting some ERA free outs.

Loewer got the win, and Hawblitzel earned a hold.

Final score 4-9.

4-4 Spring Training

Timmy KGB was a defensive sub in the 8th, playing 3B and shortstop error free but without a PA.

We played run-free ball winning 4-0 over the Expos. Fernandez got the Win, while Bottalico got a hold. Lowe did not despite 3 innings of 1 BB, 0 hit ball bringing his spring ERA down to 4.15. Everyone else who pitched on the Marlins still has a 0.00 ERA.

Bullinger gave up 3 ER in 1 inning for the loss.

Charles Johnson got a HR. Cliff Floyd got a double and a single. Trot Nixon singled twice to repair his average to .278.

5-4 Spring Training

Timmy KGB had a nice performance, going 6 innings, with a double and a triple in 3 AB's for 2 RBI's and 2 Runs. He added 2 Stolen Bases having reached on a T Lovullo Error. He was proud of getting 2 2-out RBIs after stranding 2 scoring position runners in his last 2-out at bat. He also earned a player of the game award, his first.

Andy Petitte got his first win improving to 1-1 this spring training. He gave up 3 runs, all of them due to a Santangelo error. Improved his ERA to 3.38 while Powell, Christiansen and Osuna got 0.00 ERA holds and R Nen went the last inning continuing his 0.00 ERA spring training with his first save.

Bryan Daubach doubled twice in 3 AB, trying to recover his bad start to spring as he reached a .176 average.

Arrojo gave up 4 earned runs in 4 innings for the loss. He's now at 4.50 ERA on the year, which must be disappointing for him after a 0.00 4 inning performance previously. He's 0-1 this spring training.

Final score was 6-3 over Colorado.

5-5 Spring Training

I really wanted that winning record to last. We had a close game that went 14 innings before losing 3-2. I played at 3B going 0-2 and getting hit by pitch. I had a stolen base earlier in the game, but it added insult to injury when I was caught stealing for the first time this spring training when I ran after getting beaned.

Powell had a blown save giving up 1 ER in 1.0 innings of work, while Magnante came in in a tie game to earn his 2nd loss with another ER while only working two outs. Magnante has been very disappointing as the pitcher has good tools but a 27.00 ERA this spring.

Ryan Dempster was injured pitching and will be out 1-2 weeks with an oblique strain.

Bryce Florie got the win for Milwaukee. He went 2 innings with 1 ER so was a bit lucky to get the run support he needed at just the right time.

5-6 Spring Training

I was solid defensively. That's about the only positive for this game as I was 0-3 at the plate before being pinch hit for. My average is down to .278, which is still fine for a defensive shortstop but far from where I want it to be.

Even worse, this good team is back to losing ways as we got shutout 5-0 by the New York Mets of all teams.

Reed got the win and Rose got a Hold while Tam and Bowie did not. On our side Alfonseca took the loss with 2 earned runs from 2 outs. Lilly added insult to injury with 3 ER in 1.1 innings of work. Percival and Rhodes continued to pitch 0.00 ERA while Saunders put in an ERA free inning to improve to 4.50 on Spring Training.

Griffey Jr threw out Arias at home to prevent it from being even worse. But not much else was good as we were held to 3 singles as a team.

6-6 Spring Training

Timmy KGB pinch hit for A Reynoso in the 7th going 0-1 and falling to .263 this spring. He hates these 1 opportunity games as he feels he has far more to contribute.

Still it was happiness in the clubhouse as we fought back to even in 10 innings, winning 3-2. Christiansen got his first win, Lowe got his first hold and Powell got his 2nd save. Reynoso and Heredria pitched ERA free as well, while Wood went 2 innings on 2 ER, and got beaned for his effort.

Cecil Fielder was player of the game off of his 1 HR.

6-7 Spring Training

The first spring training loss of my career was rather unfun. I pitched reasonably well giving up 3 hits over 4 innings. Unfortunately, those hits were in succession, culminating in a HR. To add insult to injury it was at 2 outs with an error previously committed in the inning. So I retained my 0.00 ERA but added a loss for my efforts making me 1-1 this spring. My only plate appearance of the game was a strike out, my first of spring training.

Lowe and Osuna pitched with 1 ER each while J Wright added two. Saunders went 1 out without an earned run.

The main positive of the game was a Ken Griffey Jr. Homerun. We lost 7-1.

7-7 Spring Training

I sat entirely while the team beat Atlanta 3-1. Ken Griffey Jr was the biggest hitter with a single, a double and a stolen base. Fernandez got the win, Lilly, Nen, Magnate got holds and Powell got his 3rd save.

We are 14 games in and there haven't been any cuts so far. I'm guessing the management really wants to get a better look at some of the prospects unlikely to make the team this year.

8-7 Spring Training

Timmy KGB went 0-3 sinking towards the Mendoza line as he's hitting .217 right now. He left runners on base with 2 outs again.

Fortunately, Pettite got the W (2-1 this spring), going 4 innings of 0 run ball. Alfonseca and Percival were credited holds, while Bottalico and Rhodes weren't. Ren pitched 1.0 inning at the end to get his 2nd save.

We won 5-2 vs the Cardinals. Morris got a strange loss (0-1) on only 2 runs, while Pote added 3 ER in 2.2 innings afterwards. I'm pretty sure Pote should have got the loss but the statistics have been strange this game.

8-8 Spring Training

Timmy KGB got a double a single and 2 SB in losing effort where he went 2 for 3 brining his spring average back up to .269. The 3rd at bat was unfortunately a strike out.

Hampton had his worst game this spring giving up 3 ER in 4 innings and Heredia came in and lost it with 4 ER in a single inning of work. Magnante had his best performance this spring giving up 1 ER in 2 innings while our remaining pitchers (Christiansen, Saunders) were ERA free.

Nomo got the Win with 3ER in 4 innings of work and Dreifort got his 8th save, but everyone in between didn't get a hold.

Final score 8-3 vs LAD.

9-8 Spring Training

Timmy KGB had his worst batting performance to date 0-3 with 2 K's. His fielding was better, error free and a successful pivot on a double play. With his average sinking to .241 he's nervous about his position as a fielder and in the batting order.

Hernandez improved to 1-1, Wright and Bottalico got holds and Nen got his 3rd save. Smith was the losing pitcher giving up the only 2 runs of the game, both earned.

Livan Hernandez got the most mild stat line for player of the game I've seen. 1-2 with a 2 RBI single was good enough. It helped that his pitching was good too I suppose, 1 Hit, 1 BB over 4 innings of work.

10-8 Spring Training

Timmy KGB was a fielding sub in the 9th inning and got a nice out.

We won 7-4 as Wood got a W, Osuna, Dempster and Lowe got holds and Nen got his 4th save. Ren continues to be spectacular with a 0.00 ERA, while Dempster has a respectable 1.59. Everyone who pitched today is at 4.50 or below, in particular it's nice to see Lowe improve to 3.00.

Meanwhile Campbell got shellacked for 5 earned runs in 4.0 innings, earning that loss.

Trot Nixon had a double, 2 singles and a stolen base for player of the game, while John Roskos, Alex Gonzalez and Robin Ventura all went yard.
