What settings do you use?

Having just picked up the game last week I’m new to a lot of the settings. I’ve played around with the game a bit, I set up a would be 2003 WS between the Redsox vs Cubs. Redsox crushed the cubs 4-1. I set up a 2004 historic league which the Cardinals beat the Redsox 4-2. One of the things I noticed was Dan Haren was the ace during the playoffs for them. Ideally I’d like to set the league up so the player is only used about as much as he was during the season. Now if a team over performs in the replay and makes the playoffs requiring to go over the usage of a player well that’s fine not everything is going to be perfect, just trying to figure out where to draw the line.

So for example my next league I’m setting up for one year only is a best of the 80s teams, while I watch this doc on the 1980s cardinals teams on mlb network. All the World Series winners from 83-89 are in the league along with other great teams Redsox 86, 88 A’s.

What would the best settings for a league like this, obviously I don’t want trades and I don’t really need a deep minor system. How do I get the players to perform like they did in real life? Obviously when you match up great teams vs great teams the stats aren’t going to be exactly the same but for example I don’t want dan haren for example who only pitched 46 IP in 2004 developing into a star and pitching a 160 IP like he did in my other league.

One final question, how do I transfer the strategies from the team to my custom league and managers. The managers is less of a problem but most of the strategies look like their a generic default.

Thanks for any replies back.

Be ready to accept that ALL historical players will not perform the way you expect... some players will underperform and some will overperform... if you have trouble with this, you need to do what I do.... play fictional players where you will not have any expectations or preconceived notions.

OOTP is still a great game... the good players in general will be good... the bad players will be bad... but that will not happen 100% of the time... 90% of the time, I guesstimating.

Years ago in earlier versions (2006 Version) I had Tom Seaver go 7-22 with a 5.00 ERA in one of my all-time all-star leagues... Joe DiMaggio hit .250 in his career... this sometimes happens in OOTP, but not in general... Whitey Ford didn't do well, either... Mike Schmidt had a poor career, too.

Since then I have played fictional leagues with fictional players.

iverbure, if you have OOTP20 from Steam there is a mod on the Workshop there I posted titled By The Decade. This is a custom league of the best team from each franchise of different decades as quickstart files. These have not been posted to the OOTP21 Workshop yet. You can download them for OOTP20, create a new league and then import that league to OOTP21 if you want.

For these teams I needed to make all of the transactions because when I imported them to a custom league OOTP defaults to using the opening day rosters. When creating a custom league apparently OOTP uses the default import settings.

Eugene, try my Baseball Greats league posted on the Workshop for OOTP20 and OOTP21. This is a new approach to putting so many great players in a single league so that you still get acceptable results. The default settings are for 2009, but if you want to play in a different year just change both the season and the strategy settings from the menu.

For historical games you will get very good results if you use proper game settings.
