Rule 5 draft question

I had a player taken from my team in the Rule 5 draft. Later that year, that team decided to release him, so he was returned to my team. He is designated for assignment, but when I try to put him in AAA it tells me he has to be on the 40 man roster. Is that right? He obviously wasn't on the 40 man roster before because he was Rule 5 draft eligible. Does the fact that he got taken and returned to me require me to put him on the 40 man?

I agree with you, I believe he should be able to go to our minor leagues but this has been the same thing in every year of OOTP with rule 5 guys. I believe you should also be able to let the other team keep him and get financial compensation and allow the player to stay in the new team's minor leagues.
