Free Agents Left unsigned

I know this has been discussed in many posts before, but I'm going to bring it up again.

I am having very good free agents go unsigned every year.

What are the best ways to prevent this from happening? What cash maximum is best? I never use a salary cap. What about amateur drafts rounds? Will lowering that help?

It seems like everytime someone asks what to do about this problem, people respond with things like "Give all the teams big TV contracts and set them to expire in 100 years"

I don't want to do something like that. I don't want to remove features from the game to get it to work correctly.

Thanks,
Bob

Well the thing is sometimes decent players get left unsigned. Anyone heard from Chuck Finley yet this year, for instance. Granted he isn't great but he has been a very good pitcher.

Also the key is that occasionally the player will not like the teams that can afford him for whatever reason and wants too much to sign with the teams that do like him. He should get signed relatively early in the season to a 1 year deal with a team that can afford him.

Look at it as he didn't accept arbitration from his team and therefore wasn't allowed to play for that team again until May 1 but wanted to.

Points well taken, but also take this into consideration:

Chuck Finley is 40 years old.

I find that most unsigned free agents tend to get signed in April. I've been worried when I've seen the likes of Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Frank Howard and others still available but they always get signed pretty quick.

I mean even a one year deal MIGHT be one too many...

I wouldn't even say that Finley is a very good pitcher.

Since 1994 - the past nine years, he has an ERA of 4.29 or so. Not great.

And I know what you're saying, Rolen, I just thought Chuck Finley wasn't a great example. That's okay though, because I couldn't come up with any better.

They'd get signed a lot quicker if I saw them in the FA pool . I may not need OF, but I can ALWAYS find room for any of those guys - if I had the cash. I know what you're saying, though. I hate it when A-rod goes unsigned, then signs a 3 million, 1 year contract, and then this repeats for the rest of his flippin' career. Sometimes he won't even get the stupid one year deal.

Also, depends on some of your league settings, like cash max. If it is low then chances are slim that they will get picked up. But if it is set at like 20M+ then the chances go up of them being signed.

It varies, one solo league I have is set at 40M and there are marginal free agents but no stars. Which is good and needed.

Best example of the 1-year free agent thing would be Ivan Rodriguez. Granted, he signed before spring training, but his situation was similar to what those unsigned OOTP free agents go through: Player wants a high salary and long-term contract that no team is willing to give him. So, player ends up taking one year deal in an attempt to get the long term big money deal next year.

dbacks, Chuck Finley was the only guy that came to mind off the top of my head because I know that StL is looking at bringing him back in May. Shane Reynolds is out there now as a free agent. Granted he was released.

Another example would be John Wetteland a few years ago.

Or Kenny Rogers. Who declined something like a 2 year 10Million dollar (total) deal from the Rangers back in November, because Boras was convinced he could land more then that on the market. Rogers sat there until the end of Spring Training before signing with the Twins. He had interest from a number of teams, but wanted a specific type of deal and couldn't get it.
