Inspired to sim the Mets season....here's what happened.

I read an article online today where someone simmed 2019 for the KC Royals. I thought, why haven't I done that for my beloved Mets? Oh yeah, because the last thing I need is to have it driven home to me in March that I am headed for inevitable heartbreak.

That said, I happily started my sim, making roster moves and trades, letting the AI do the rest.. Here's how it went: (I blogged the season much the same way the KC Royals simmer did).

Mets Sim 2019
Expectations: play close to .500 ball
Extend Justin Wilson
Reach WS in 4 years

April
April 4th: Arizona asks about J. D. Davis. After some negotiating, Mets trade Davis and minor league pitching prospects Noah Nunez and Matt Cleveland for reliever Greg Holland and minor league prospects Geraldo Perdomo (SS), Jamie Westbrook (2B) and Dominic Miroglio (C).

April 8th: Jed Lowrie comes off the IL, Dom Smith sent to AAA to make room for him.

April 9th: Todd Frazier comes off the IL, Jeff McNeil sent to AAA.

April 10th: Travis D'Arnaud comes off the IL, sent to AAA for rehab assignment

April 19th: Devin Mesoraco to the 10 day IL with strained oblique; Jeff McNeil called up

April 24th: blockbuster trade - Jason Vargas, Jacob Rhame, Zack Wheeler and minor league 3B Servyen Newton go to the Dodgers for Kenley Jansen (Dodgers retain 35%) and minor league prospects Keibert Ruiz (C), Tony Gonsolin (SP) and closer Marshall Kasowski. Catcher Tomas Nido promoted to the majors.

April 29th: D'Arnaud's rehab time is over in AAA, promoted to Mets, Nido demoted to AAA.

Mets end April 16-13, 5 1/2 back in 3rd place in the East. Notables: Cano leads the team regulars in hitting, .284/.315/.500; Pete Alonso leads the team in HR's with 5. DeGrom has been stellar, carrying over his Cy Young ways with a 5-0, 0.76 era/0.80 WHIP line in April. Cano is sixth in the NL in doubles (10). deGrom leads the NL in ERA by almost a full run over Pat Corbin, tied for the lead in wins, leads in WAR (2.2); IP with 47.2, second in K's with 52, 5th in K/BB ratio (6.5); Syndergaard second in K's per 9 innings (11.3). Diaz is 3rd in the NL with 8 saves.

MAY
May 26th: Mesoraco comes off the IL, making roster problems. Traded him to Houston along with pitching prospect Cesar Loaiza for P Roberto Osuna (retaining 10%) and LF prospect Alex McKenna. To make room for Osuna, Nimmo sent to AAA (batting just above the Mendoza line for two months).

May 27th: Even though we have Osuna, Diaz and Jansen, Familia makes it known he is unhappy with not being the closer.

May 28th: Believe it or not, Osuna tears his UCL - out for the season after one appearance as a Met. Dom Smith is hitting .301 in AAA and gets the call-up.

Mets close out the month of May 31-26, 9 1/2 back, in third place. Jeff McNeil leads the team in batting with a .280 average; Keon Broxton leads the Mets with 8 hr. deGrom is now 8-2 with 1.61 era and a 0.79 WHIP; Familia the best in the pen with a 1.66 era and 1.02 WHIP. Lugo is struggling, 1-3 as the #4 starter with an era of 6.

JUNE
June 28th - a huge month for the Mets ends badly as Steven Matz hits the IL with a partially torn labrum, putting him on the shelf for the next 2-3 months. His 3.36 ERA and 1.25 WHIP will be missed. Promoted to take his place is long-time minor league knuckleballer Mickey Jannis.
Still, a huge month for the surging Mets, as Pete Alonso won NL Rookie of the Month and Noah Syndergaard won NL Pitcher of the Month. The Mets are now 53-33 after a 21-7 month that included an eight-game winning streak. The Mets are still 4 games back of the red--hot Nationals, who have a 56-28 record through June.

JULY
July 3rd - Mets trade Travis D'Arnaud to the Texas Rangers for rookie outfielder Willie Calhoun and pitching prospect Ariel Jurado. 20 year old phenom Keibert Ruiz is promoted to take his place.

July 6th - put Keon Broxton and his .190 batting average on waivers, to be claimed by the Atlanta Braves.

DeGrom, Syndergaard, and Familia are all selected for the NL All-Star team.

July 14th - Brandon Nimmo recalled from AAA

July 17th - Houston offers a blockbuster trade - George Springer, pitcher Hector Rondon and elite pitching prospect Forrest Whitley for Thor and pitching prospect Ryley Gilliam. I hate to turn this down but I do.

July 26th - it's the return of Yoenis Cespedes - some much needed offense (we hope) as the Mets have been all pitching up to this point. We trade Todd Frazier and pitching prospect Marcel Renteria to Seattle for Kyle Seagar and (YES!) former Met draft pick Jarred Kelenic. Dom Smith and his .188 average go back to AAA to make room for Cespedes.
Mets close out the month 65-43, 6.5 back of the Nats. We do, however, have a 5 game cushion for the Wild Card.

August
Aug 26th, we finally catch the Nats and take sole possession of first place, half a game up on Washington. Our record is 81-49. The Wild Card is just about a lock, with the Nats now nine up on the Phillies.
Aug 31st, we're tied for first in the division with Washington. Philly is a distant third, 11 out. Atlanta is 11 out, and Miami are 37 back. DeGrom heads into September with a 2.09 era, well behind Jack Flaherty of St. Louis for second place in the league. Thor is third with a 2.96 era. DeGrom and Thor lead the league 1-2 in WAR, and are 1st and 3rd in K's with 225 and 214 respectively. They are also first and fourth in WHIP - DeGrom with 0.85, Thor with 1.00. Conversely, the Mets have no one up top in any offensive category, unless you count Rosario being third in the league in triples with 8. Bring on September!

September
September 1st - roster expansion. Mets bring up Paul Sewald, Dom Smith, Ryan O'Rourke, Steven Villines, Gavin Cecchini, Willie Calhoun and Luis Guillorme.

Sept 8th - Jed Lowery goes on the IL with back tightness
.
Sept. 10th - we get Steven Matz back from the IL.

Sept. 11th - after batting .303 in limited action in Binghamton, Tim Tebow announces his retirement.

Sept. 16th - Mets CLINCH! 95-54!

Sept. 18th - Jed Lowery returns from the IL. Mets are 5 up on the Nats and pulling away.

Sept. 26th - Mets win #100, beating Miami 3-1. Thor went seven strong for his 18th win.

Sept. 30th - Mets finish the regular season 102-60, six games over Washington. Bring onthe playoffs!!! Pete Alonso wins NL Rookie of the Month again.

Jeff McNeil leads the team in batting with a .304 average; Alonso had 32 homers and 90 rbi's to pace New York. It was 90% pitching that got the Mets to the playoffs, with the team 1st in runs against, starters ERA, FIP and WAR. Bullpen ERA was 4th.

October
Oct. 7th - Thor outduels Soroka, going nine strong to shut out Atlanta 1-0 to take game 1.

Oct. 8th - deGrom follows suit, pitching the Mets to a 3-1 win.

Oct. 10th - Braves take game three in extras, 5-4. Diaz gets the loss in relief.

Oct. 11th - Mets take the series 3-1, beating the Braves 6-1. Series MVP was Michael Conforto. Seth Lugo blows the Braves away for 8 innings to move the Mets to the next round, against St. Louis.

Oct. 15th - Mets take the opener in comeback style behind Noah Syndergaard, 7-5 over the Cards. Down 5-4 in the ninth, they tied it up, and then Amed Rosario hit a walk-off two run homer to seal the victory. Diaz earned the victory in relief.

Oct. 16th - DeGrom shuts down the Cardinals 6-1.

Oct. 18th - the Cardinals strike back, shutting out the Mets 7-0 and holding them to one hit. Steven Matz gets KO'd in the 4th inning and the Mets can get nothing going against five different Cards pitchers. Starter Carlos Martinez was pulled after 3 and a third with an unknown injury.

Oct. 19th - Mets are now one game away after Seth Lugo and the bullpen put together a masterful 1-0 shutout of the Cardinals. Rosario doubled home Wilson Ramos in the fifth for the only run of the game.

Oct. 20th - a double loss, as the Cards stave off elimination, winning 7-5, but also Jeff McNeil exited the game with an injury in a collision at second base, likely to have him miss any remaining Mets games. McNeil was batting .267 with one home run and seven rbi in the playoffs.

Oct. 21st - METS WIN! 4 games to 2. Cards catcher Andrew Knizner was named series MVP in the losing effort. Miles Mikolas was the tough luck loser as Noah Syndergaard once again held St. Louis scoreless through 7, while also hitting a home run. SUBWAY SERIES UP NEXT!!!!!

Oct. 23rd - Mets lose Game One at Yankee Stadium, 6-3. DeGrom was rocked for 6 earned runs in 6.1 innings, with Chad Green earning the win in relief.

Oct. 24th - Mets are down two games to none, losing Game Two 6-2. Matz-Dowdy-Jansen were all ineffective against the Bombers lineup. James Paxton pitched seven strong for his third win of the post season.

Oct. 26th - Seth Lugo pitched well, and the Mets win in walkoff style - Amed Rosario again, doubling off Chad Green to put it in the books in the ninth inning at Citi Field. Yanks lead 2 games to 1.

Oct. 28th - Mets tie the series up 2-2, with Noah Syndergaard the hero, pitching 8 shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out 12. Once again, the Mets hit just enough to win, with only six hits.

Oct. 29th - Yanks crush the Mets, 9-1. The Yanks scored 7 runs in the first inning off Luis Avilan and Mickey Jannis and never looked back. The Mets are down 3 games to 2.

Oct. 30th - Mets come through in the clutch, crushing the Yankees 9-2 to force a Game 7. The Mets knocked James Paxton out of the game after three innings, and cruised to a Game 6 victory. Two home runs from Robinson Cano and one from Kyle Seagar were all the offense they would need. DeGrom went 6.1 for his third win of the playoffs. Game 7 is tomorrow night. Matz vs. Tanaka with everything on the line.

Oct. 31st - The Yankees owned this game until some ninth inning drama. Leading 7-3 and Aroldis Chapman to close it out in the ninth, he walked Rosario, Nimmo and Alonso in order. Betances then came in to walk Conforto, making it 7-4, bases loaded, no outs, and Cespedes at the plate. He grounds into a double play, but the run scores making it 7-5, with two outs and a man on third for rookie Keibert Ruiz, a .199 hitter in the regular season the tying run at the plate. Batances rears back and.....strikes him out. Yanks in 7.

Post season: Rosario and Nimmo won Gold Gloves; Familia was runner up for the Top Reliever Award; Pete Alonso ran away with ROY, slashing a .257/.369/.483 line with 32 home runs and 90 rbi. DeGrom and Syndergaard finished second and third for the Cy Young behind St. Louis' Jack Flaherty. They also finished 9th and 13th in the MVP voting, losing ultimately to Bryce Harper.

Ok, so...while I hate the Yanks winning it all and Harper winning MVP - I can't argue with the way the rest of the season panned out.

Let's Go Mets!

Thinking about, there needs to be a thread dedicated to everyone just simming a season with their favorite team just to see the outcomes.

Nice thread. I thought they were going to win it in the end, but it’s almost better that they were just eclipsed at the end.
I’ve been to playoffs about 10 times in OOTP but never won the WS. Surely I’ll make it this year!
