I’m trying to find a way to fit a couple of tournaments into the universe I’m creating. I have three leagues, one is 12 teams and the other two are each 10 teams.

I want to have a 32 team tournament separate from the regular season/playoffs that each league will take part in from April through October.

I am wondering if it would be possible to hold the 32 team tournament instead of spring training. It would start with a qualifying round in which every team would play 18 games. (They would be divided into 8 groups of 4, playing each team in their group 3 times.) I would then take either 1 or 2 teams from each group to create a 16 or 8 team double elimination tournament playoff to determine the champion. I would like to do this right before the start of the regular season.

Do you think this would work? Would it serve as a successful tournament while also knocking off rust accumulated during the off-season?
