Thank you for the link, which does a good job explaining the term's general usage throughout the sport. Is there a thread that explains the role and how it differs from other bullpen roles?

The converse is true if you set a reliever to 'Avoid High Leverage.' At least, that's been my experience.

Think of leverage as being similar to the 'close and late' idea. In a close game (within a run or two) and in the last few innings, your high leverage guy will get called in.
Conversely, with avoid high leverage, that guy will get called in when there is a big lead or deficit, and likely regardless of inning. Doesn't mean they can't still end up in a close game, but the AI will try to avoid that. Exactly what 'close' is and how late in the game it is being measured, I don't know. I would guess within 3 runs and after the sixth, but it could also be affected by the quality of opposing hitters. But those are the essential 'leverage' parameters getting taken into account. |
