Peak cards

Why would a particular year of a player be better than his peak? For example, the 1953 Eddie Mathews card is much better than the Eddie Mathews Peak card.

The explanation that keeps the voices in my head calm has to do with how the self-declared Hall of Fame pundits always throw stuff like the 7-year peak of a player around. So the peak will be his best seven years, averaged out, but an individual season card might be better than that average.

It's the only reasoning that keeps the world spinning for me.

Markus explained in another thread - http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...64&postcount=2

"..peak means the ratings are the average of his 5 best seasons. These are usually lower than one single great season."

Which is a reason why so many modern cards seem better than most historical cards. The modern cards are all built on a single year of ratings (for more variability), where historical cards are usually diluted with many separate seasons.

No, the only historical cards that use peak are the All-Time Legends set, a very small number of players (8 on the auction house right now out of a total of 2300+ cards.) The other historical types are individual seasons.

Personally, I'm not a fan. Feels weird to have every other type of card using single seasons and this small group doing something else.

Yeah, I guess for OOTP 20 we'll change the All-Time Legends so that no longer the 5 peak years are used, but rather the single peak season for each individual stat category, which would essentially create super players. These most likely will all be perfect cards.

This would still feel weird with a small group of contrived historical cards not using real seasons. Is there any reason why the category couldn't use the player's peak season (maybe top WAR year for players that don't have a card in the Top WAR category)?
