Best way to play OOTP5?
I was just wondering how you guys all played OOTP5...Do you play solo or online? Do you play manager career or just play? Fictional rosters or Real? How long do you play for (season-wise)...what year do you play in? I like fictional leagues and fictional players, but it's hard to play them because you have no real background of any of the players, so it's difficult sometimes if you just want to sim month by month. And I hate in real rosters how all the guys you like eventually disappear
Can any of you guys describe (in-depth if you really want to) how YOU play OOTP5? Thanks!

While the beauty of this game is that there are so many ways you can play, in my historical career sim (Flashback League) I sim one week at a time. I find that, aside from injuries, most roster moves like FA signings happen on a Sunday (or Monday) so I go from Monday to Monday.
In my fictional league, I play some and I sim some. I try and "win" a series, so I may play the opening game of the series, then sim the next one. If I win the first two games, and can not lose the the 3 game series, I will sim the third game also. If I lose the first two games Ill also sim the third. If the first two games are split, Ill play out the 3rd game to try and win the series. Playing this way I find it a little easier to get into the fictional players ( but Id say I still prefer historical career sims) Last edited by Nukester; 03-22-2003 at 08:00 PM. |

I was a right avid Topps baseball card collector as a kid from 1989-1993, so I started my managing career in one of those years. I also like the added difficulty when trying to make the playoffs. Only 4 out of 26 teams make it instead of 8 out of 30.
I manage all of the games since I want to have as big an impact on where the team finishes as possible. |

I play solo, and I usually play manager mode. About half the time I use real roster and half the time I don't. I keep going with the same franchise until I get sick of it, but I usually have a couple of franchises goign on at one time.

I usually simulate, sometimes I play the postseason, but rarely. The Play-by-play is awful boring to me
I just like developing players and stuff.

Online leagues are a lot of fun. IF you get in a good league and there isn't a lot of bull****.
I didnt like solo leagues until version 5, but now with the manager mode and the other improvements I find that its a lot of fun. |

LOL I though of this EXACT response. Of course, I was going to add that it's also fun to play in the sandbox, but the PC is the best way to play. I usually play online but I've gotten into my NFL league big time. Basically, I set up OOTP like the NFL, using NFL teams, and set the schedule for a 17 week schedule, each team playing a game on Saturday and Sunday (a home and home) set up just like the NFL schedule. The 32 game schedule is great, I can play out my games at a fast rate (when I go back and do this) but I've been testing it to see how it'd work long term and have found that if I use one stadium (since NFL stadiums are all exactly the same in dimensions, this makes sense) and set the seating to 1 million, teams average enough players per game to make the financials work. It's been REAL fun and after I get 20 years or so to insure this will work long term, I'm going to go back and play out every game... or I'll just retire and create a 'new' manager (probably my first son who I've drafted yet he's a 1.5 star player so he won't be making the HOF or anything) and go from there. Online is the best though, as the competition vs real humans make the game the best. |
