Question on "Automatically control in-game engine"

I'm in an online league that's having a bit of trouble with minor-league stats going wacky. We're trying to edit the league modifiers to make things better, but it appears that the modifiers are at their default settings already. My question is: should we turn on the "Automatically control in-game engine" option? The online manual suggests that turning it on has problems in the low-minors, but it doesn't say exactly what those problems are.

Furthermore, the option to turn it on is grayed out. What needs to be changed to turn it on?
