Alignment For Fictional Game

I am about to expand to 24 teams in my fictional game and was looking for input on whether I should go with:
  • 3 Divisions Per League (4 teams per division)
  • 2 Divisions Per League (6 teams per division)

If I go with 3 divisions per league, I would have to add a Wild-Card to make 4 teams per league in playoffs, but if I go with 2 divisions, I wouldn't have a Wild-Card, but rather just the 2 division winners.

Thoughts?

In my fictional league I have two six-team divisions. It has worked very nicely for me. But no deep analysis behind that.

Always avoid the wild card whenever possible, in my view. Although I have to admit that my St. Louis Cardinals had to go through the process at least once, if not more than once, in actual reality to ultimately win another World Series for the franchise. Don't like it, to be completely honest here, folks. But it was still necessary, unfortunately, due to how Selig and others messed up the game by going to three divisions in both leagues, among other mistakes he and others made while he was in charge of organized baseball, for sure. CD out.

This. 4-team divisions are phony.

This is just a personal decision about what you like. Personally, I'd potentially also make the decision based on where the teams are located, too. There's something oddly satisfying about having a division layout that makes sure the teams are nicely geographically aligned. I've had cases in my games where the teams lined up perfectly except for one team. Mysteriously, they would often pick up and change cities that off-season.

I think that 4 team divisions mean that too many bad teams fall into the playoffs, but I'm definitely a small playoffs person generally, rather than an NBA or NHL style "more than half the league should make it" guy.

I think it should be about a third of the league making the playoffs, at most a half.

My current league I've gone for 8 team divisions in a 32 team league.

I have 3 5-team divisions in each league. 2 wild card teams per league that play best of 3 Wild Card Series to advance to the Divisional Series.

My vote is for two 6-team divisions. I consider that the classic two-division arrangement. (It also has the benefit of many real-world MLB schedules you can use for that set-up.)

Also a fan of two six-team divisions. The schedule is balanced so that you play each team in your own division 18 times and the other one 9 (assuming 162 game schedule).
