Hitting coach ratings
Had a question about hitting coach ratings.
In my 2021 Cardinals, I have Tim Hyers as my hitting coach. He owns a rating of great did an impressive job in 2020, his first season after leaving the Red Sox, our team batting average was middle of the pack, but we were among the league leaders in runs scored, home runs and on-base percentage. We also won the World Series. Made me think, where is current Cardinals hitting coach Mark Budaska. Who is kind of considered a hitting guru with all the success he has had in recent seasons with the Memphis Redbirds before his promotion to the bigs in July. He is coaching an independent league team called the Garden City Wind, boasting an inexperienced rating. So I dwelved deeper into the editor numbers. Budaska is Handle Players: 130, Handle Veteran 142, Handle Rookie 117 and Teach Hitting 146. As compared to Hyers: Handle Players 98, Handle Veterans 99, Handle Rookies 97 and Teach Hitting 108. Is Budaska a better coach? And actually Hyers ratings are among the lowest among the hitting coaches in the Cardinals system. I am not saying replace Budaska with Hyers , but should I hire him for a lower level. As being in independent ball, I would label him as being available. Not quite grasping the correlation between Hyers "great" rating and the low editor numbers. Last edited by rink23; 08-08-2018 at 12:10 PM. |

Yes, Budaska is a better coach. The great rating for Hyers is generated by the success of the teams that employed him.
I don't like the "fog of war" that was applied to coaches a version or two ago. There is very little to go on in making a hiring decision. I can understand why it was felt that seeing everything is too much, but I would at least like to see some idea of his ratings in the various attributes without having to look at the editor. Maybe a poor to excellent rating for a couple of categories such as handle players for managers and the individual teaching elements for coaches. I think is also fair to know which coaches work well with younger players when looking for low-level minor league hires. |

I thought that was the case, Budaska being a better coach.
I can see how, in some ways, looking at a coaches editor ratings could be considered "cheating." But don't really take that tack, as in today's SABR-based world team's having ratings on everything and I assume that includes coaches. And is in, we have no real way to gauge a coach's proficiency other than what's seems to be a team-success based rating -- unlike with player's where we have mountain of number'/rating we can scour through -- to have a peak at what makes them tick is probably plausible. |
