Tempted to Pull the Trigger

Nearing the trade deadline in my fictional league and noticed a few oddities. Granted, much of this can be related to my setup and where I am at in the league history but thought I would share here in case others have similar observations in their sims.

Note on my league, started in year 2000 with free agency required after 8 years of service. I am in middle of 2007 season so any players that were existing at start of league are in the final years of their contracts. With recent changes to trade blocks and trade frequency I've seen a large number of players hit the market or be traded for pennies on the dollar. For instance, at moment there are 116 players on the trade block out of 827 in league (14%). This does not include any on my team as I haven't listed any on the block.

Also, some studs are available for near nothing. Take the case of Mr. Christian McKay, one who is not on the block but clearly is the best player on his decrepit team. Selected to 7 consecutive all star games and winner of last 3 pitcher of the year awards. Was scheduled to be a free agent at end of season but just signed three year extension with club on June 22. I was surprised to find him being offered when shopping players in my organization. Curious to see what Elwood would accept I went to trade screen and hit "make this work now" button to find that 134 of my 156 players in organization would be accepted for a 1-1 trade. Including low level scrubs or older players on verge of retiring. Would expect if he ever were to hit the market his team would ask for a king's ransom in return considering he's now under contract for 3 more years. I'm resisting the temptation to add that arm for a Mr. Irrelevant...

Again, I am not complaining just thought I would share. Believe most of this could be related to the structure of my league and just timing of first true free agency cycle. My universe has two rival ML leagues with similar rules and structures. Both have 14.6% and 16.2% of their players listed on block at the moment as well. Not sure if numbers would continue through upcoming seasons when I should have less of a pending free agent class.

I've summed forward a few years to see if things would even out a bit. Trade block appears consistent:

2007 GBL 14.0%, CBL 14.6%, EBL 16.2%
2008 GBL 13.6%, CBL 13.5%, EBL 11.1%
2009 GBL 13.5%, CBL 12.3%, EBL 10.9%
2010 GBL 14.4%, CBL 15.7%, EBL 14.2%

Trading for superstars however looks to be off. Any quality player that I attempt to trade for who is over 30 years of age I can do so with just about anyone in my organization 1-1 unless the team is in a win now mode.
