DISSING DETROIT A vrobx1 OOTP 19 Player Story
Irony.
Irony fills our lives every day. A moment from our past comes full circle and one again we see the irony in life. Irony. Choosing to take Sally instead of Sue to the prom and then fifteen years later you are married to Sue instead of Sally. Irony. You choose to play baseball instead of football because baseball is a safer sport and three years later you ruptured tendons in your knee sliding into second base. Irony. Our lives are full of irony. This is what I am thinking as I dress for my first ever professional baseball game. I am in Florida, where I played some games as a member of the Rice University Owls. But that's not the irony I am thinking about. I am thinking about the irony that tonight's opponent is the Tigers. The team that chose me a year ago. With the first pick of the 2018 Amateur Draft. Tomorrow I am playing against them. Well, one of their Gulf Coast rookie teams that is. I, Robert James, catcher for the Gulf Coast League Mets, failed to sign with the Detroit Tigers one year ago and today I make my pro debut against the team that I probably would have been assigned to if I had signed. That is my irony. |

Now, I have nothing against Detroit.
In fact, I was honored to be the first pick in the draft. They were just unable to work out a deal with Scotty. You know who Scotty is. Everyone knows who Scotty is. The most hated agent in all of baseball. Maybe the most hated agent in all of sports. But there is a reason the best players go to him. He gets them paid. And, yes, I called myself one of the best players. I don't think that's being arrogant. I mean, I was the number one pick in the draft last year. And Scotty got me paid real well by the Mets. And, overall, as far as pay goes, I'll make more long term in New York than I will in Detroit. What's that? I sound like I am all about the money? Of course it's about the money. Isn't the money the reason you go to work? |

It's an interesting contrast between sports.
Eli Manning, for example, refused to play for San Diego and everyone lost their mind. How dare he! Screw him! Spoiled! Entitled! But it's a common thing for someone to not sign with the team that drafted them in baseball and the national media barely bats an eye. Now, some of the more vocal Tigers fans on social media? That's a different story. I have had injury wished upon me. Death threats. One even said my mother should have aborted me. And these are the ones I can print here. Some of them are so vulgar in their distaste for me that their abuse of the English language would probably have my content removed from this lovely family site. So we won't talk about those. Oh, and then there was one Tigers fan who wished a fate worse than death on me. His words. "A fate worse than death. I hope you get drafted by Cleveland! And I don't mean the Indians." Sorry to disappoint you. I got drafted by New York. And I don't mean the Yankees. "Enjoy playing for the New York Mess you @#$%%#*&!" I hear Detroit fans are far worse towards hockey players they don't like. |

I will finish getting my degree from Rice University when the GCL season is over. My girlfriend, Osmara Resendes, also attends Rice University. She wants to be a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.
Just between you guys, don't tell her, but that's kind of silly. The girl is actually a very bright mathematician and could be a great engineer but she wants to dance around in tight shorts. Which, I don't mind the tight shorts, let me tell you now. I just hope they don't put her on that stupid tv show if she tries out. They go out of their way to make those girls look stupid. Of course, Osmara loves the show and has made me watch it with her. That's how I know about it. It's her fault. Marriage? No we haven't discussed that yet. I'm just 21 and we're still in college. Of course, there is the fact that I am now a millionaire but don't let the signing bonus fool you. Most of that money is locked away in investments, not to mention sucked dry by the IRS. They slapped one helluva tax on that bonus! |

Well, this is fun!
I been rambling along about nonsense and meanwhile we have started the season 4-0. It feels good to be swinging the bat well. Swinging the bat is all about getting hot and right now, I am smoking! |

There seems to be a lot of guys with the name Robert James who give this baseball thing a go...

Hey all you Mets fans out there following me and all you Tigers fans that still hate me.
We got out first loss today. I can hear you cheering all the way from Detroit, Tigers fans! Losses happen. No one goes 162-0 in MLB and no one will go 60-0 in the GCL. It's all good in the hood. Now, to address a complaint some of you have. About my attitude towards my girlfriend wanting to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. One person wrote: "You play baseball for a living but call her dream silly?" Yeah, well, that's a good point. Or will be a good point. Just as soon as the Dallas Cowboys pay their cheerleaders a four million dollar signing bonus! Until then. Don't try to compare the two. Truth is, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders is a group of pageant girls who are too old to be pageant girls. The only thing missing on the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders tv show is someone singing You Light Up My Life. Osmara is better than that. |

A three-game losing streak was not what I thought would happen after we started 4-0 but I am still hitting the ball well.
The GCL is just a developmental league anyways. Just for polishing up skills to get me ready for The Show. The wins are important but secondary importance. Someone told Osmara what I said about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and she had some choice words, in Spanish, to say to me. Hope you home wreckers are happy! |

Some have asked where exactly I am.
I am in Port St Lucie, Florida. This is where the Mets play their Spring Training games. They also have an upper A team here as well. I'm not on that team. I am on the Gulf Coast League Mets. Man, that was quick. We've already lost four straight. After starting the season 4-0! Guess that Tigers team is really bad! |

Today was pretty good.
But not great. I got another multi-hit game. Hit another double. Nine games into the season and I have four doubles already. I am pretty happy about that. What I am not happy about is that we have now lost five in a row. Development league or not, losing game after game after game stinks! Osmara tells me to participate in the community at Port St Lucie. She'd big into that sort of stuff. It's a funny thing. That won my mom over. Mom was not that thrilled that I had started dating a Hispanic girl. (She's Puerto Rican, by the way). But Osmara started dragging me around to places in Houston like meal kitchens and things and mom suddenly started to like her a lot. Dad still thinks she's a "blanket-blank wetback" but to hell with him. Oh, and Dad, Donald Trump still ain't built that wall and still ain't going to so there! Back to Osmara and Port St Lucie, I got a few of the guys together and we are joining the 2019 Tree Project. In 2018, Port St Lucie had a drive to plant 185,000 trees. We're trying to top that this year. Port St Lucie was named 2017 Tree City USA "for its commitment to the vital role that properly maintained trees play in keeping Port St. Lucie green and beautiful." Planting trees. Don't really have to deal with strangers and the exercise of planting trees is a good workout. For those of you thinking I am turning into a tree hugger. Yeah. No. |

It's funny when haters want to call me a "dumb jock" on my blog.
This dumb jock got into Rice University. What community college did you graduate from? We needed that win! I came through big time. But I had the chance to do even more damage but stranded five runners in the game. That's a lot of ribbies I missed out on. |

No, I don't like extra inning games. I get paid to play nine innings. We don't get overtime pay. |

The only thing I dislike more than an extra inning game is losing an extra inning game! Six doubles in twelve games. I do love me some gaps to hit to! |

Oh, the simple minded sports fan.
"You only play for the money. You don't love the game." Do you people go to a restaurant and complain that the waiter only serves you for the tips and they don't love to serve? No. You don't. And, in case you are asking, yes. I tip. I tip generously. I know the horror stories of waiters and waitresses stiffed by millionaire athletes. I also know Osmara waited tables for two years in high school to help her parents pay the bills. So, I will always tip and if the service is excellent with a smile, I might even drop a Benjamin down. Just because I can! We dropped below .500 again. When you consider that we started the season 4-0.... we have played like crap! |

Osmara was an Algebra tutor helping out the sports teams at Rice. Yes, even athletes at Rice sometimes need some academic help.
We met through there and just kind of clicked. It didn't hurt that she had all the right curves in all the right places. The girl has also been very active in the Latin American community in Houston as well as preparing to try out for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. And is still working with local organizations that have been dedicated to assisting those who were victims of Hurricane Harvey. Almost two years later and we still have people struggling to recover. So, for those of you who say that Osmara is good for me and someone I better appreciate, believe me. I do! And we are back to .500! That's what I like to see. |

Osmara sent me a snap wearing her Astros jersey.
"I love you, babe, but I'll always be an Astros girl." I hope she's happy! |
