To Sim Or Not To Sim

I watch a lot of YouTube videos of people playing OOTP and especially enjoy the ones by ThatSportsGamer & SnaggleJ. I notice that a lot of them sim through seasons and I understand that some people do it due to time constraints, but I personally would rather play out the games than sim them. Last night I was playing out the games for the 2018 season and got as far as August when I chose to sim the rest of the season out to wrap up OOTP18. My team, the Cubs, got eliminated in the NLCS by the Dodgers who wound up losing to the Indians in the World Series so I was happy to see Cleveland win it all.

However, the next season I decided to sim on Opening Day and somehow Jon Lester threw 160 pitches. I kid you not. 160 pitches. And he wasn't even pitching a no-hitter or perfect game. The first thing I did was check to make sure that Billy Martin did not come back from the dead, thinking this was the 1981 Oakland A's. He did not. And there were other questionable decisions and moves made with the lineups and pitching staff and I played around with the ratings (50/30/15/5) which probably caused the stats to be slightly skewed.

So I decided to pull the plug on OOTP18 and get ready for OOTP19. I'm excited for a clean slate and to test out the new game and all of the new features. But one thing I won't do it sim. How do you all feel about simming? Yay or nay?

I honestly sim the entire season and then play the playoffs. It 162 games and I don't enjoy playing them really. I like micromanaging my lineup and minor leagues and watching as the season progresses. Playing the playoffs is just what makes it most fun for me.

I usually like to sim game by game while checking the box scores and recaps. There has always been an appeal to me when it comes to playing out every game, but it takes a lot of time to get through months, let alone seasons doing that. What I try to do is compromise by playing out a game once or twice a week and simming the rest, which has been pretty awesome for me personally.

I also sim to the playoffs, and even then, I only play out elimination games. With the new animations and stuff though, I might start playing out 1 game a month, against a catcher with a bad arm and a bad opposing pitcher, so that I can just run wild.

I sim almost all the games with "Real Time Simulation".

A few times a season I sim ahead a few days - but normally I follow all my games with RTS.

I sim a week at a time. About once every two weeks I will stop and read the news, and check out the rest of the league.

I just simmed the rest of the 2017 season and my team the Cubs lost to the Mets in divisional round and in the World Series it was the Twins losing to the Dodgers. Bad news for the Cubs they lost Lester for a year to torn flexor tendon.

Edit: Tom Ricketts just sold the Cubs to business man Steve Baade. Also the Yankees were sold as well.

I also prefer to play my games out (1-pitch mode though) vs. simming. The latter is very time convenient but I don't feel as connected to my team's season. I should add that I only play a 27 game season (roughly 1 game a week to match the entire length of the real life 6-month MLB season).

I play them out for the most part. I'm in no hurry. I've got plenty of time. I'll sim out the rest of the season if I've been eliminated from contention. I don't like releasing control of my team to the sim. It does stuff I don't want to happen. And I have many seasons going, so I bounce around from one to the other.

i sim games, but stop to draft.. then iafa in july, plus any promotions of highe-end prospects.

if i rush i can play a season in ~15-20mins... if i take my time it can take an hour or so. sad thing is, the extra 40mins doesn't really add up to a ton more wins, but i squeeze every last drip out of evry possibility, nonetheless.

i do that for ~20 years, then go into warp mode. whatever ~rev i prove to average, i just hard-set it into reality after that to save myself a bit of time. after ~20 seasons, i don't want ot have to adjust ticket prices 20-30 times during the season to eke out that extra 20-30M. i streamline some ancillary stuff like that as far as continued efforts, but finances are probably the bigges bulk of time-savings. i start auto-drafting once the good prospects are gone too. that's probably ~10mins/yr shaved off.

if it's a 3d video game like the show, i play games out, because i can learn the timing of the pitches and be really good at it. but with ootp, i'm fine letting the AI click "1" and "2" for me.

if i lose the first game or two of a playoff, i may jump in, but not so much anymore.

manage every game, one pitch. get fully immersed.

couldn't imagine playing any other way. at times my OOTP world is more important than FBB or MLB.

I also sim regular season and watch the playoff games. I play only as GM as I like rebuilding the team and handle the staff. I want to see if my manager can do it without my intervention.

Usually, when I take over a team, I will play out every game in spectator mode until around the All-Star break of the first season. After that, I will spectate 1 game per series, simming day by day the rest of the time. When I am out of contention, I will sim to the end of the season once I have done all of my year-end housekeeping. In the offseason, I will sim week by week.

Game by game got me more in depth into my league, when I sim seasons at a time, it feels like its not really happening but when its every day it does

If I am playing GM/Manager then I definitely play out every game. Otherwise what is the point of playing the game? I am not bagging on you guys that prefer to sim (to each their own) I am just trying to make a point on this side of the street. I understand simming if you are short on time, have wife and kids, demanding work hours, etc. etc.. I am fortunate to have time.

I love to be able to enjoy the team that I have put together. I want to be the one to make the transactions, set the lineups, promote/demote players, make the decisions in games, etc., rather than have the AI (gotta love him) make these decisions for me.

Of course if I have created a baseball world where I am an observer and controller, I do sim, one week at a time, sometimes I will pick out single games, I really try to get in tune with the world that I have created. This is the only way that I sim.

This game is THE BEST sports simulation game ever created and we simply should squeeze every drop of goodness out of it we possibly can each year. Next year they will have another keg waiting for us!

Same, it doesn't help that I've never played Baseball so I wouldn't call myself that versed on the in-game tactics.

I always imagined myself to be a GM, and leave the in-game managing to my manager.
