Introducing the Baltimore Orioles...

Owner: Jon Castro
Manager: John McGraw
Ball Park: Oriole Park
Payroll: 30,550
City Population: 508,957

Starting Lineup
C - Jody Davis (31)
1B - John Kroner (29)
2B - Vic Power (32)
3B - John McGraw (28 manager)
SS - Ed Holly (26)
LF - Ted Williams (30)
CF - Chad Curtis (24)
RF - Joel Youngblood (25)

Ace - Corey Kluber (27)

Face of The Team

Ted Williams - CF

Williams may be the best hitter the game has produced and his ability to carry a team and an offense should be seen immediately. Williams isnt the most likable person either by his mates and his fanbase, but his ability on the field speaks for himself.

Final Analysis

John McGraw will be the fire of this team, both on and off the field. His ability to keep Ted Williams happy and get the most out of Cory Kluber and his pitching staff.

Introducing the Boston Americans....

Owner: Sean bin Mukhtar
Manager: Jimmy Collins
Ball Park: Huntington Avenue Grounds
Payroll: 24,794
City Population: 560,892

Starting Lineup

C - John Henry (20)
1B - Moose McCormick (20)
2B - Brock Holt (27)
3B - Eric Hinske (24)
SS - Jim Gray (23)
LF - Joe Keough (23)
CF - Bob Jones (27)
RF - Bryce Harper (21)

Ace - Sam Weaver (29)

Face of the Team

Bryce Harper - Right Field

Much excitement over the 21 year old talent that is Bryce Harper. Harper puts it all on the line and fits in perfect for the type of player that Jimmy Collins is looking for. Some say that Harper can be reckless, but he will be fun to watch and should induce fire on the roster. He is already a leader of this team.

Final Analysis

Most feel this Boston team may not have enough to fight for the pennant this season. The order has decent players but few stars and Sam Weaver will likely need to keep games close as he tries to win. The team does share the city with the Beaneaters of the National League, so a good first year would bode well.

Introducing the Boston Beaneaters

Owner: Jon Walker
Manager: Frank Selee
Ball Park: South End Grounds
Payroll: 28,600
City Population: 560,892

Starting Lineup

C - Bob Tillman (28)
1B - Harvey Hendrick (28)
2B - Claude Ritchey (32)
3B - Joe Kelley (34)
SS - Ron Hansen (27)
LF - Chris Latham (23)
CF - Danny Green (27)
RF - Ryan Braun (29)

ACE - Max Scherzer (30)

Face Of The Team

Max Scherzer - SP

Few arms can match that of Scherzer who is expected to be an immediate candidate for best in the game. He is a bulldog on the mound and most have pinned their pennant hopes on his ability

Final Analysis

Two real stars in Scherzer and Ryan Braun will make the Beans a team to watch. Still, there isnt very much here past the stars and the team should have trouble scoring runs. Joe Kelley and Claude Ritchey do make a strong infield and there will be fight in this hard nosed team.

Introducing the Brooklyn Superbas...

Owner: Alfredo Rodriguez
Manager: Ned Hanlon
Ball Park: Washington Park
Payroll: 26,390
City Population: 1,166,582

Starting Lineup

C - Tom Needham (26)
1B - Dick Hoblitzell (21)
2B - Jorge Cantu (22)
3B - Steve Ontiveros (21)
SS - Bill Hunnefield (26)
LF - Boog Powell (21)
CF - Jon Knott (27)
RF - Andre Eithier (26)

ACE - Whitey Glazner (28)

Face Of The Team

Dick Hobitzell - 1B

A good atmosphere and club is lead by the player they call the Doc. Hobitzell is the spark of a very young team that should be full of energy and aggressive play. Hobitzell is a fine fielder with the glove and fir in fine in the three hole ahead of young slugger Boog Powell.

Final Analysis

Brooklyn should be a competitive team and Ned Hanlon knows he has the full support of the passionate fanbase and area. Th pitching lead by Whitey Glazner is the biggest question going into the year, but what club doesnt have quetions at this stage?

Introducing the Chicago White Sox...

Owner: Mike Hall
Manager: Clark Griffith
Ball Park: South Side Park
Payroll: 27,290
City Population: 1,698,575

Starting Lineup

C - Jack O'Connor (24)
1B - High Pockets Kelly (28)
2B - Snuffy Stirnweiss (27)
3B - Minnie Minoso (47)
SS - Tex McDonald (21)
LF - Carlos Guillen (33)
CF - Bob Zupcic (24)
RF - Felix Jose (23)

ACE - Deacon Phillipe (27)

Face Of The Team

Minnie Minoso - 3B

No one will be looked at with more intrigue then 47 year old Minnie Minoso. The talent on the team lies elsewhere with Tex Mcdonald and High Pockets Kelly but Minoso is truly a sensation to be able to play at his age. Many are saying this will be his only season of play, but there he is in the middle of the order for Clark Griffith.

Final Analysis

The White Sox should be in the run for the pennant as Deacon Phillipe is a very good and crafty ace. There is also not a lack of characters and players that speak their mind which could make for a fun clubhouse. Chicago will be tough to face up by anyone.

Introducing the Chicago Orphans....

Owner: Gilberto Odilo
Manager: Tom Loftus
Ball Park: West Side Park
Team Payroll: 29,660
City Population: 1,698,575

Starting Lineup

C - Jimmy Ripple (29)
1B - George Gore (27)
2B - Fernando Vina (32)
SS - Alex Rodriguez (33)
3B - Jordy Mercer (27)
LF - Rick Leach (30)
CF - Rick Miller (23)
RF - RIck Monday (36)

ACE - Jose Rijo (24)

Face Of The Team

Jose Rijo - SP

Rijo has alot of character for 24 years old and in his own mind thinks he as is good as anyone. His stuff can be lights out for hitters if his control is on and if his nerves are calm. Most would say he is the leader of the team already and holds the fortunes for the Orphans. On stuff alone, Jose Rijo is worth keeping an eye on.

Final Analysis

Some age in the lineup between Rick Monday and Alex Rodriguez who are expected to perform. Some are already feeling that ARod has built bad relationships on the team from day one. Rijo will be dynamic, but a whole lot will have to go right if this team has an outside shot at a pennant run.

Introducing the Cincinnati Reds

Owner: Danny Depew
Manager: Bid McPhee
Ball Park: League Park
Team Payroll: 28,410
City Population: 325,902

Starting Lineup

C - Chris Hoiles (30)
1B - Andres Galarraga (32)
2B - Al Weis (25)
3B - Mike Moustakas (24)
SS - Joe Tinker (28)
LF - Brian Lesher (26)
CF - Jayson Werth (28)
RF - Len Gabrielson (27)

ACE - Bob Welch (29)

Face Of The Team

Joe Tinker - SS

Tinker is said to be the type of player who could care less about being nice to you but will give his life for the team on the field. Tinker has a magic glove and a supurb up the middle while taking the responsibilities of hitting right in the middle of the order. It is all about winning for him, and the Reds cant complain about that, despite his lack of personality. Tinker provides an excellent backbone to a very good team.

Final Analysis

Many people like this team going into the season and a pennant could be in the cards. The lineup has alot of weapons while the infield defense is something special. Bob Welch will have his work cut out for him but has the makeup of what one wants in a good ace. The Reds are expected to win, I wouldnt bet against this hard playing bunch.

Introducing the Cleveland Blues...

Owner: Brendan Holt
Manager: Jimmy McAleer
Ball Park: League Park
Team Payroll: 29,060
City Population: 391,768

Starting Lineup

C - Jack Slattery (25)
1B - Larry Biittner (35)
2B - Billy Martin (27)
3B - Terry Moore (28)
SS - Buster Hoover (24)
LF - Henry Rodriguez (32)
CF - Woodie Held (24)
RF - Bobby Murcer (27)

ACE - Clayton Kershaw (23)

Face Of The Team

Clayton Kershaw - SP

Its an age of pitching and it appears Cleveland may have the very best. Kershaw has stuff that can hardly be matched and his dominance at the young age of 23 could spell years of winning for this club. Kley can even swing the bat a bit and field his own position, he is a pillar for a team that should be among the best.

Final Analysis

Cleveland is expected to be among the favorites for the flag. They are one of the few teams that have an established captain in Les Bell as Billy Martin and Bobby Murcer are also real gamers. With Kershaw the ace, this Cleveland team might be the last one standing.

Introducing the Detroit Tigers...

Owner: Rob Brame
Manager: George Stallings
Ball Park: Bennett Park
Team Payroll: 26,660
City Population: 285704

Starting Lineup

C - Johnny Bassler (27)
1B - Don Mattingly (25)
2B - Juan Samuel (24)
3B - Bobby Adams (36)
SS - Bobby Wheelock (23)
LF - Matt Mieske (28)
CF - Eli Marrero (30)
RF - John Mabry (25)

ACE - Bill Sweeney (25)

Face Of The Team

Bill Sweeney - SP

Adding to a league that is very heavy on great ace pitchers, Bill Sweeney adds to this fact. Sweeney should give the team a rubber arm and could take the ball every third day if needed. He has all the tools, and is in his prime years. Manager George Stallings cant say enough good things about him.

Final Analysis

Detroit is among the smallest cities to have a club, and gathering real support can sometimes be task. The club does have som real talent, along with Sweeney, Don Matthingly is a true talent at first base and has the tough mental attitude all winners need. Juan Samuel is a good player and catcher Johnny Bassler may be among the most underrated players in the game. Most think this Tigers team has an outside chance to remain in the pennant race.

Introducing the Milwuakee Brewers...

Owner: Dan Ranck
Manager: Hugh Duffy
Ball Park: Lloyd Street Grounds
Team Payroll: 27,530
City Population: 285,315

Starting Lineup

C - Frankie Hayes (32)
1B - Ferris Fain (30)
2B - Tony Taylor (39)
3B - Rollie Zeider (27)
SS - Johnny Pesky (32)
LF - Mitch Webster (35)
CF - Jim Eisenreich (28)
RF - Wily Mo Pena (22)

ACE - Alex Jones (29)

Face Of The Team

Alex Jones - SP

Jones has been taking heat from scouts and the media as the weakest ace on any team but the 29 year old doesnt care. Jones will be supported by arms like that of Michael Wacha but few expected the team to have what it takes. Jones for his part has a variety of pitching and an iron will to get the job done.

Final Analysis

Many are expecting tough days ahead for this Wisconsin team which seems to lack a real star and depth. Going in farther many are saying a pro team doesnt have the staying power in Milwaukee as many fans slock to the two clubs in Chicago. Johnny Pesky is a nice player up the middle and Frankie Hayes is a talented catcher.

Introducing the New York Giants...

Owner: Ted Homminga
Manager: George Davis
Ball Park: Polo Grounds
Team Payroll: 28,860
City Population: 3,437,202

Starting Lineup

C - John Boccabella (32)
1B - Jack Fournier (25)
2B - Danny Moeller (24)
3B - Jack Mcaleese (30)
SS - Mariano Duncan (23)
LF - Carl Yastrzemski (32)
CF - Darren Lewis (26)
RF - Marv Throneberry (28)

ACE - Teddy Higuera (26)

Face Of The Team

Jack Fournier - 1B

Tall, handsome, and the perfect face for the most followed team in the league. Fournier bats from the left side with power and might and can move around the bases suprizingly well. At times his glove could be a bit lazy, but big Jack crushes mistakes and should love to play in the spacious Polo Grounds.

Final Analysis

Fournier and Carl Yastrzemski will carry the weight of the offense for this team but the offense doesn't have much more to offer. The pitching is the strong point as Mexican Teddy Higuera teams up with Bret Saberhagen to form what is possibly the best duo in a rotation. The Giants have their pundits and the pressure will be on in the big apple but dont be surprised if this club is pushing for glory in the early autumn.

Introducing the Philadelphia Athletics...

Owner: Bobby Morales
Manager: Connie Mack
Ball Park: Colombia Park
Team Payroll: 24,924
City Population: 1,293,697

Starting Lineup

C - Tom Daly (20)
1B - Hank Sauer (33)
2B - Garry Jestadt (23)
3B - Dick Allen (23)
SS - Rico Petrocelli (20)
LF - Ron Stone (26)
CF - Aaron Cunningham (21)
RF - Larry Harlow (28)

ACE - Pete Dowling (24)

Face Of The Team

Dick Allen - 1B

Philadelphia loves their youth movement and Dick Allen is at the center of it all. The strong first baseman is a towering presence at the plate and will make Colombia park look like a sandbox. Not the most approachable man who can be lead footed on defense, little of that matters as manager Connie Mack wants him at the plate in the middle of the order.Just the look on the face of Allen will make pitcher nauseous.

Final Analysis

Connie Mack believes in building a winner in the long term and the youth for the most part of this roster shows that. Rico Petrocelli and Dick Allen have not reached their prime yet while 6 of the starting nine will be under the age of 25. There are some questions about the outfield and about starter Pete Dowling for sure, so winning may not be the expectation this season but the fanbase seems to have the trust in the Connie Mack plan.

Introducing the Philadelphia Phillies...

Owner: Pete Cox
Manager: Bill Shettsline
Ball Park: National League Park
Team Payroll: 29060
City Population: 1,293,697

Starting Lineup

C - JC Boscan (32)
1B - John Olerud (33)
2B - Pete O'Brien (26)
3B - Ken Oberkfell (31)
SS - Phil Rizzuto (33)
LF - Tom Grieve (24)
CF - Reggie Smith (23)
RF - Tony Armas (27)

ACE - Bill Sowders (23)

Face Of The Team

Reggie Smith - OF

Lean, fast, and committed, Reggie Smith is only 23 and has the future hostage. On a fine looking team, no player seems to have it all put together like Smith who will play center field with the best of them. Defensively Smith can run them all down and he truly possesses five tool talent as he will bat in the middle of the order but have support from sluggers like Tony Armas. Reggie Smith could be a fixture in Philly for the next decade.

Final Analysis

The Phillies expect to be among the favorites for the pennant with a lineup headed by Tony Armas, Reggie Smith, and Ken Oberkfell. Even more important could be the Phillies defense that is among the best with scooter Phil Rizzuto up the middle Bill Sowders has alot to prove but will throw for a team that most scouts really like.

Introducing the Pittsburgh Pirates..

Owner: Chris Schwickerath
Manager: Fred Clarke
Ball Park: Exposition Park
Team Payroll: 29770
City Population: 321,616

Starting Lineup

C - Bob O'Farrell (30)
1B - Jose Abreu (27)
2B - Jim Clinton (32)
3B - Hans Lobert (31)
SS - John Atz (29)
LF - Brian Buchanan
CF - Mike Trout (23)
RF - Gene Stephens (26)

ACE - Ham Iburg (28)

Face Of The Team

Mike Trout - OF

Is there anything Mike Trout cant do at the age of 23? The Pirates know what they have in Trout and the city and franchise are ecstatic about the future. His centerfield play is second to none and the comparisons to Bryce Harper and Ted Williams have already begun for best player and MVP of the league. Trout has speed on the bases as well and is a great teamate with a great mindset for the game. Pittsburgh hopes he stays a Pirate forever.

Final Analysis

One of the favorites for the NL pennant and a very good team. Trout heads up a very good lineup that also has Jose Abreu and Jim Clinton. Hans Lobert and Bob O'Farrel are fine defensive players that do the little things to win. The performance of ace Ham Iburg will be key of course, but Tim Wakefield at 43 years old just may get a look or two. The Pirates would appear to have what it takes.

Introducing the St. Louis Cardinals..

Owner: Brandon Jackson
Manager: Patsy Donovan
Ball Park: Robinson Field
Team Payroll: 28,500
City Population: 575,238

Starting Lineup

C - Bengie Molina (34)
1B - Sam Crawford (35)
2B - Joe Inglett (28)
3B - Don Hoak (28)
SS - Bobby Lowe (25)
LF - Bob Raudman (24)
CF - Dave Winfield (32)
RF - Stan Javier (36)

ACE - Dad Clarke (28)

Face Of The Team

Dad Clarke - SP

Clarke is from Oswego Illinois and is the pride and joy of the midwest. He now is the ace of a good Cardinals team and he seems to be overlooked by many as one of the more potentially great starters in the NL. Batters to have a tendancy to hit him in the air but hard contact is another matter with all his movement.

Final Analysis

Everyone is in agreement that this is a good club, the question is how good. Centerfielder Dave Winfield is part of a lineup that should be in the prime of their years and ready to win now. Bobby Lowe and Sam Crawford can support Winfield while catcher Benji Molina is a team leader and motivator. The Cardinals are good enough to be right there in th race in the fall.

Introducing the Washington Senators..

Owner: Kevin Malone
Manager: Jim Manning
Ball Park: American League Park
Team Payroll: 24,416
City Population: 278,718

Starting Lineup

C - Dave Duncan (23)
1B - Jim Fregosi (33)
2B - Ray Morgan (26)
3B - Tom O'Malley (21)
SS - Jack Hannifin (22)
LF - Richie Sexson (26)
CF - Jerry Shoonmaker (22)
RF - Jack Smith (19)

ACE - Smokey Joe Wood (18)

Face Of The Team

Ray Morgan - 2B

Moragan is a Baltimore native and is proud to be playing close to home with this Senators team that will fight for the pennant. Morgan is a quick footed player up the middle who is contact driven and a grinder at the dish. Fans are sure to love his effort and leadership for a team that has a number of very young men at key positions.

Final Analysis

Smoky Joe Wood is only 19 years old but has earned his nickname for a reason as he is leaned on to get the most outs on this team. Tom O'Malley and Jack Hinnifin are barely into their 20's but will play a prominent role on the left side of the infield. Few players have as much power or height at Richie Sexson who may hit the Capital Building from the ballpark. In the end, this team may be a year away, but the Senators will be a factor in the American League.

BASEBALL REVIEW
MAY 1901

EARLY SEASON INTRIGUE

The opening month of the season saw record crowds come out and watch the national game and the first glimpse of the pennant race taking shape. The contenders from the pretenders in early spring are starting to take shape, but so much baseball yet to be played heading into the summer.

The White Sox lead the American League and have been pushed on by their outstanding pitching staff. The club has a combined ERA of 2.08 and Ed Klepfer is 4-0 with 18 strikeouts. The Sox were the first team to 10 wins but have the hot Detroit Tigers right behind them who have won 5 in a row.

Boog Powell of the Brooklyn Superbas has it all going lading the league with 15 RBI and 3 long balls. Brooklyn however are 8-10.

Injuries have played a big role in Cleveland as Clayton Kershaw missed four weeks through a shoulder injury and in turn the club has won only 2 games.
