Jack Cust is an O!

Jack Cust was traded to the Orioles today for Chris Richard and some cash.

Is Cust the prospect he was 2 years ago?

I think his stock has fallen off somewhat, but I think he could still flourish if he doesn't have to play the field at all

To answer your question, no.

His stock rose when he was traded to Colorado in the Mike Myers deal (power hitter in Coors), but it fell when the Rockies acquired Payton and Kapler at the end of the season. Now, going to Baltimore, he has more of a chance to play, but he still hasn't proven much at the ML level. I think he's ready for a shot...but as Woddy stated, only as a DH. He is just down right horrible in the field...looks lost. Reminds me of Jose Canseco towards the end of his career.

Dunno, if true that makes the above quote even funnier, though unintentionally.

Was there this much hype over Rob Deer when he came up?

doesn't matter if Cust hasn't proven himself at the MLB level yet. The trade was for Richard who just had surgery and won't even be 100% in the field for quite a while. He didn't amount to anything on the Oriole's roster the last two seasons and is now 28 years old. If you look at it that way, then getting the 24 year old Cust was a major plus for the Orioles. At least he has potential versus Richard.

Here's a little analysis of Cust and the trade from a popular O's web site (don't laugh, despite being an Orioles' site it's both good and pretty popular) : http://www.orioleshangout.com/Wilt/jwilt031103.htm

From Baseball Primer's Transaction Oracle.

Acquired DH Jack Cust from the Colorado Rockies for OF Chris Richard and cash.

Oracle Says:

I'm struck speechless by this trade which is a steal if the Orioles make the most of it.
From the Rockie point of view, Cust was a sub-Bichette in a non-DH league and outfield defense is important at Coors with such a large outfield. Richard will be in an upgrade in that department.

But, when you look at what's truly important, Cust is a young and talented hitter and he's heading to an organization that doesn't really have any position players that are young or talented. Well, unless you count Brian Roberts who shouldn't hit enough to be anything but a pitcher.

The Orioles being the Orioles, you can't just look at a trade without looking at what the Oriole-induced downside of a player move can be. The O's apparently want Jack Cust to start the season in the minors based on the erroneous notion that he's being blocked by the Oriole stable of designated hitters. It doesn't sem that they recognize that none of their stable of designated hitters are really all that valuable.

Despite the downside, Beat Again do get a temporary reprieve from me at least. That is, until they lose Cust on waivers because Jeff Conine wants to play another year.

I do love my Orioles. They've mastered the fine art of managing to keep their payroll fairly high without spending money on anyone worthwhile. In fact I bet Albert Belle and Scott Erickson, who will combine for absolutely zip this year of course, probably cost about the same as the Minnesota Twins starting lineup.

That said, we do now have a second Jay Gibbons. I'm looking forward to an order that has Mora, Gibbons, and Cust, 3 guys that could hit .220 with 30 homers! Rob Deer (Dave Kingman, etc.) fans, this is your team.

He is but he'll walk quite a bit. Think Thome with a much lower BA and likely less power.

Cust isnt Thome with a much lower batting average, He's more of a Frank Thomas clone. Sure he'll strike out alot, but in baseball today all power hitters strike alot.

Cust definitely can put up .285, 35 HRs, 100+ walks playing at Camden Yards.
The question is, is he gonna get a chance to play?

I think this was a great deal for the O's. It gives them a little youth. I think this works out for both teams. So its a pretty equal deal.

Frank's career baseline numbers. BA .314, OBP .432, SLG .568

If Cust turns out to be that good it will be an incredibly lopsided deal.

I don't see anything in Cust's record that suggests he's capable of putting up Frank Thomas-level batting averages in his prime. Maybe Cust could match Thomas's 2002 performance. I thought the Jim Thome-lite description was accurate.
