Does Age Matter? Too many 50 year olds in my league!
I am 99% sure it is my own issue, but thought I would clarify anyway. Does age matter?
I imported a 'custom' lahman database. That is, I used real life players, but I picked and chose them, made the default year 2002, and adjusted everyones age in the lahman database accordingly. So, I have young 20-year olds and old late 30-year olds. However, it does not seem to make a difference as to when they retire! I have to players playing into their 50's and over 25 in their mid-to-late 40's! So, when importing from Lahman, does age matter? Any ideas?

Quick Example -
Earl Averill AGE 50 - .306 BA, .559 SLG, 29 HR, 121 RBI 114 R. I think his bat is on Viagra or something. Carl Hubbel AGE 47 - 18-8, 3.05 ERA, 233 IP, 186 K, 215 H, 33 BB. The list goes on and on. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Earl Averill - The Gordie Howe of baseball
My league only has a few 40+ year olds and they all suck. My oldest guy, a 39 year old says he is retiring this year. I did as you, importing and starting in the year 2002. But I did not adjust any ages. Just a question, why did you change their ages if you just picked and choosed regular MLB players? You shouldn't have to as the importer will automatically make the player the correct age for the year you are importing. Maybe there is some kind of change-age bug that resets the age counter or something. But personally, I have no problems with the Lahman database. Last edited by DaleReeck; 03-15-2003 at 12:27 PM. |

Well, I wanted to import an entire league, and not one player at a time.
I thought the only way to do this was to create my own 'lahman database' by picking and choosing my desired players, then adjusting all years to a common year, 2003 for example. Then, you can load the entire player pool up at one time instead of one at at time. If I don't adjust the birthdays of the players they would import wacky. Babe Ruth was born in 1895, if I import him to a 2003 league, he would 108 years old. Is there any easier way I glanced over?

Ah, you wanted to import players from all over baseball history, not just modern ones. I see.
I assume you edited the database so that all players' ages are set so that when you made the league "2002", the players would age accordingly. For instance, in the database, if you wanted Babe Ruth's age to be 25 in 2002, then you would make his 1920 database age -60 (negative 60). But that didn't appear to work. I'm not sure if the game can work with negative numbers when importing. Did you try importing the custom players without changing the age in the database and just change it in the game manually? Time consuming, but I can't think of another way than the two lsted here. Perhaps there is some sort of third party player editor out that might prove useful in editing player ages in the game. |

Sort of. Lahman and OOTP use Birth Dates instead of age, so instead of the -60 idea, if I want Babe Ruth to be 22 years old in"2002" I change his birth date to 1980 (and of course, his stats are from the year 2002).
So, I am successfully 'tricking' the game into making ruth a legit 22 year old. Quite simple and quick with Excel/Access. And it is not that NO ONE retires, many players do - some as early as 35. It is just that so many more retire at advanced ages. Perhaps it is becuase so many of these players are great. Think about it - a 22 year old player who bats .345 / .475 / .780, with 50 HR's. Maybe he is too good?

C'Mon OOTP Kings! You guys know everything.
Some other must have some thoughts on this too? How come my league has 3 50 year olds, and 27 others over 45?

not sure you need to fake it out. I import All time great players all the time without adjusting their ages. The engine adjusts for you just like you are trying to do.
if your league year is 2002 and you import Ruth from 1921 then you will get Ruth at the age he was in 1921 imported into your league. steve
