Moncada Diagnosed with MS
I decided to try to build the Brewers into a contender, and was able to pry Yoan Moncada away from the White Sox in a massive trade. Anyway, as my first season was winding down, I get this message on Moncada.
I want to scream. |

Five days seems... exceedingly optimistic.

in his game world tehy discovered a cure.
if you don't like this sort of thing, turn off "Storylines" - global settings, i think ... if oyu do turn it off, you can undo the moncada thing with commossioner mode on in the player profile editor. even though it says 5d, i think that's CEI, eh? |

In the official announcement of the diagnosis, Moncada said he's going to play through it until the doctors tell him to stop.
I am using commissioner mode, but I don't want to interfere with the game and just try to work through it. I gave up a lot to get him, so I am disappointed that I traded Arcia, Villar, Monte Harrison and a minor league catcher for Moncada, David Robertson, Todd Frazier and Zach Putnam. What I found interesting is that Villar's potential dropped 20 points after the trade because the White Sox made him a center fielder. The Brewers' pitching staff is a major problem, so Robertson and Putnam help the bullpen a lot. I like where I'm headed with this team, but the developments with Moncada are a major blow. On Reddit, someone posted a screenshot of Mike Trout joining the military. |

I really love this because it is something that really COULD happen.
I am less of a fan when a star prospect decides he is going to give up the game to become a missionary or play golf. It just seems so unlikely.

Actually, thats kind of amazing.. Personally, Im a Blackhawks hockey fan so I feel for this (love you Bickell) but I actually have have family friend that is dealing with MS, and it sucks. But I think it's cool that it could actually happen in-game.

Dude...
You scared the crap out of me. As a White Sox fan I was terrified when I read the title of this thread. Even though I should have known it was related to an OOTP universe I still freaked out. Thanks for that.

look for a talent drop next scouting report. maybe it did nothing, maybe it diminished him etc... the way they wrote it sounds like it could happen at a later point (retirement), like there's a % chance every X amount of time?
anyway, you may want to trade damaged goods before its a problem. get a year out of him out of principle |

But if you want to be realistic about it, you should probably keep him until he retires. IRL it would be a slap in the face if a team traded a player who was diagnosed with MS, and even then, no other team would trade for him. |

slap in the face? i thikn at best that's an opinion of reality.
the owner's treat their players like cattle in nearly all ways... LoL (not just players, nearly all their employees in their other business ventures too) what you might be thinking of is repercussions of guaranteed contracts. possibly carry-over of player-instituted seniority related B.S. (e.g. why vic martinez has to play like crap for 300+ games before they bump him down in line-up -- ego and insecurity related). i promise the player's feelings are not considered anytime context is important to ignore it. money > feelings 100% in business. some exceptiosn will exist, but they are a novelty not the rule. these same owners use bean counters to determine whether to issue safety recalls on their products or continue to let their %$#-up hurt/kill people! what makes you think they care beyond public relations/optics? maybe if the media blows somethign up they change behaviour, but otherwise the status quo is to sh&t on you and make you feel happy and lucky for it. there's a long track record of this behaviour.. .it's not opinion. their behaviour defines them, not their words. |

My owner stated publicly that we will stand by Moncada, which is the right thing to say from a PR position. You can't just deal him away. I am not planning to trade him. I'll just see what I can get out of him. Hey, if he's great for a period of time, maybe he can be my first retired number.
My scout has him rated a 75 out of 80 in overall current ability, so he actually went up significantly in the offseason. Maybe his decline will be sharper and sooner. We'll see how this develops. |

only commenting on rationale, not the end choice. still rated well, may not even be a dwindling effect in ootp?
if that's really how things work where you live in a general sense, then i'm moving there ![]() ie - people do the 'right' thing even when not personally motivated to do so. |

There's an MS storyline in my fictional league, and almost two and a half years after the diagnosis, there are signs that infielder Jose Vidal of the Tucson Sunchasers might be nearing the end of his career. He's still good in the field. He was never much of a hitter but actually had his best season in the second year post-diagnosis, 2021, at .228/.318/.412, with 17 homers and 63 RBI. In 2022, he has only started 15 of Tucson's first 64 games and he's at .138/.289/.263. He's 34, in a contract year and, for some reason that I don't understand, making $21.8 million.
So your guy might go on for a while. |
