Manny "Retired" in July '91 after being taken No.1 overall in '90 Draft

Hello,

New to the game and I have started several historical seasons already and played them through, but having trouble with the season that I started for the 1990 Astros.

In 1990, I promoted Kenny Lofton up to AA and he was obviously one of the better players in the system. He "retired" after the season to pursue a basketball career, which obviously sucks, but is understandable, as he was, you know, a basketball player.

I finish with the worst record in the league, get the No. 1 pick in the draft and take Man-Ram.

Then, in July, after I had promoted a 19-year old Manny up to AA (from his player card):

12/15/1990: Drafted in the 1990 first-year player draft (Round 1, Pick 1, 1st overall pick) by the Houston Astros
......
......
.......
6/16: Was selected to the 1991 Texas League All-Star Game
7/1: Wins the TL TL Batter of the Month Award
7/10: Became a minor league free agent ..... Retired from professional baseball

I get Lofton retiring to play basketball, but I'm at a loss of what I could have done, if anything, differently here. Obviously I have retirements turned on somehow and couldn't find how to change, so this is more a question of how to prevent in the future.

Should I not have promoted Manny as 'quickly' as I did and he felt 'overwhelmed' and quit or was he not happy because his expectation was that he is 'ready for the big leagues' and wasn't promoted?

Losing Lofton and Ramirez has set back the rebuild quite a bit and just trying to prevent this from happening again--if possible.

Do you have player miss seasons due to history turned on? Have any other future MLers who were in the minors retired as well? Why was Manny a FA after being drafted?

I believe storylines are on and I have seen other players retired, which I knew coming into the game was a possibility.

Just strikes me as very odd/terrible for gameplay that the No.1 pick in any season would retire the following season, particularly when it was not a tough negotiation to sign or anything, as the pick signed for slot.

Manny was/is a FA, but only after he 'retired.' He was not a FA previously.

Yeah, sounds like you have storylines turned on. I would recommend turning them off.

Thanks for the info folks, is there a way to do that once a season has already been started? I tried to find a way to do it, but was unable to find out how.

I think it’s in League Settings then Players and Facegen. Should be able to do it at any time.

global settings tab

give a glance over his ratings, make sure they didn't decrapify. not likely unless long period of time... sometimes the storyline injury causes drop, maybe? anyway, give hima once over. maybe even delete, and re-import 1 historical player, if he is absurdly different.

The Lofton is definitely a storyline. But, Manny's retirement sounds like it could be a different issue. Do you by chance have roster limits set for minor leagues?
