A contract extension for someone with post-concussion syndrome?
I have young star player who just finished 3rd in the MVP race in his second full season. He is open to discussing an extension. An image of his profile page is attached.
As you can see with the thread title and the image, he experienced a concussion injury at the end of 2023. During the season, he was willing to sign a 7/72m extension. The only reason I did not extend him was because I did not have any extension $. My plan was to do so in the offseason, but then he experienced a concussion the week before the playoffs. We are past arbitration now and his ask is still the exact same. For someone with high greed, I am pleasantly suprised, but I also have no idea how OOTP handles an injury like this. He is locked in for the minimum in 2024 and I imagine I could negotiate his asking price in $ and years down a bit. Given his injury situation and the possibility that his ask could seemingly increase at any moment, how would you go about this situation? Thanks. |

Well, interesting problem to have for sure.
One, what a great pick for the 7th round; he developed nicely. I would offer a 5 year deal with opt out after year 2 and team options for year 4 and 5 with a buy out set at 25% of the salary. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk

That would be too risky for me to extend. Maybe see how much he wants for the 2025 season. I have picked up guys like that at a bargain in the pre-season. They were injured and were not picked up by anyone. I signed a starting pitcher who was young and had great potential. He missed most of the year, came back and I let him ride out the last month of the season in AAA. He played the next year for me and was 17 and 5.

Out 7-8 months is too risky for me - I'd rather have to pay more than get stuck eating that whole contract if he retires during spring training.

I would have just extended him for the year to avoid arbitration and then wait to see how the next year develops before thinking about a long term deal.

I'd play it out year by year, chances are that was a career year and he'll get hurt again.
