interesting AI... starter left in to allow 14 runs, 17 hits

Historical league, 1962, Dodgers vs Cardinals. Larry Jackson starts for StL, gives up 6 runs in the first, 3 in the second, and 5 in third, then is lifted for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 3rd, trailing 14-0. All runs were earned, he gave up 17 hits, walked one, struck out three, and gave up a grand slam to Duke Snider in the 1st, and three run shot to Snider in the 3rd. (Jackson's replacement, Harvey Branch, proceeded to allow 5 runs in the 4th inning... the final was 21-5.)

Never seen AI leave a pitcher in to get that hammered. At this point I'm just chalking it up to it would be pretty rare, but it could happen.

On another subject, game recaps are a great recent addition to OOTP, and I'm sure they will continue to evolve. In this particular case, the recap didn't seem to treat the LA offensive explosion - not to mention Snider's record 9 RBI - any different that had Dodgers won 5-3, with Duke driving in 3 runs.

"Behind a solid performance from left field Duke Snider, the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals, 21-5." "He drove in 9 runs and scored twice..."

I think it would depend on the status of the bullpen. Jackson was the #2 starter on that team. It's certainly defensible to leave him in after the 1st. By the time Snider hit the second homer, the game was out of reach. You can find similar decisions by real managers in 2017. Not 14 runs, but 7-9 before the manager has mercy and pulls the starter. OOTP doesn't know about mercy, and the CM didn't want to burn the extra reliever. If you don't consider psychological effects, the CM probably did the right thing.waiting to pinch hit for him. The win probability is zero either way, and giving Jackson his 100+ pitches left the bullpen in better shape for future games.

Check out this game. The A's couldn't play in Philadelphia on Sundays because of blue laws, so they took a one game road trip to Cleveland. Connie Mack only took two pitchers with him, the starter only lasted an inning and things went haywire.

That's a great link. That was the last win of Eddie Rommel's career. He was one of the more prominent pre-WWII knuckleballers, which I guess is why Mack thought he could leave the guy out there forever. He needed a month and a half off afterwards.
