Trading questio-retaining salary

When you offer a trade on a player with 2yrs remaining for say 10mil/year. If you retain say 50% or 5mil of his salary, is that only for that year or for both years?

Here, I traded Zack Grienke for a no-name Yankee scrub, and I still had to force it down Cashman's throat! You can see the before and after on my salary chart and that the salary retention applied to all the remaining year's of Grienke's contract.
