No rehab for returning injuries at the end of ST
I've run into this problem now twice in my last two seasons played, where I had a player returning from a bad long-term injury right at the end of spring training, and they weren't able to play at all in spring training, and I wasn't able to send them on rehab assignments because the minor league season had not begun yet. In the 2018 season, I had Bryce Harper returning from a 7 month absence following a broken kneecap -- his injury time ended one day after the regular season began, and I wasn't able to send him to the minors. Then going into the 2019 season, Stephen Strasburg was returning from an 11 month absence from a torn rotator cuff, and he was only able to make one spring training start before the end of spring training (obviously couldn't send him down either). Harper luckily didn't really miss a beat coming back, but Strasburg has started the 2019 season really slowly, and I think if he could have had some more time to rehab his injury, it'd help.
Is there any way around something like this? I know Extended Spring Training isn't something we can use, which would be the real-world answer to an issue like this. |

if they are on the active roster, they are knocking rust off... even if no games played. obviously, you can't typically waste a 1/25 spot... but ST is expanded #'s, normally, and doesn't drop to 25 until opening day.
so, for any injury length long enough that rust is still likely, when regular season hits, you can then send to AAA for rehab assignment. no days lost relative to knocking rust off in this example. i don't know the ratio by rote... don't even know if it's backed up with quantitative data, but you can search forums for a rough estimate of how long they need to rehab relative to length of time off the 25-man roster (see how i wrote that? not length of injury) you don't need to be injured to gather rust... a FA you sign in june who hasn't played that season, probably has rust... this is the one thing i'm not 100% certain on, but if it's consitent in how it functions/rules it should work this way.
