Mario Super Sluggers: Baseball in the Mushroom Kingdom
When it comes to console gaming, I am pretty much Mario-verse crazy. Slap a Red Italian plumber or his friends on a game and I'll give it a try. Even though I've run through many Platformers, RPGs and Kart games-I have not played many (if any) Mario Sports games. Mainly because I'm pretty bad a most sports games. I was a master of Atari 2600 Sports, but I never evolved beyond that level of sports gaming.
I recently downloaded Mario Super Sluggers on the WiiU Virtual Console. Loving Baseball and Mario, I was willing to give the game a shot at the price. As a Mario RPG, it is a weak game. As a Baseball game, it is probably overly simple for most players. But I have been having a blast with it. More than making up for the meager investment. So, as any OOTPer would do, I thought how I could make a league work with this world. There are limitations within a one-player format (I haven't yet convinced my wife to play through a two-player season), but this is a Mario Game, I can't expect everything to be true to life. The basic outline of how I'm playing through this season: I will be playing the visiting team in all games. I'll let the CPU set my lineup/defensive alignment. The games will be played in Challenge Mode. The CPU set at All-Star Level (Level 4) As visitors, I will not use any power ups. The home team's use of power ups will be their 'home field advantage'. I found the power ups tilt the balance waaaaayyy too far to the human controlled team. 30 game season Six Teams comprise the League (With home Stadium) Mario Fireballs – Mario Stadium Peach Monarchs – Peach's Ice Castle Yoshi Eggs – Yoshi Park Wario Muscles – Wario City DK Wilds – DK Jungle Bowser Monsters – Bowers Castle Games hosted by Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Wario or DK are 3 innings in length, with a max of 6 (ties are possible). Bowser plays ALL of his games at home, and games they are 5 innings, with a max of 7 (I think). Since the game does no totaling of the stats, I'll be keeping score by hand. The only 'stats' the game provides are points for certain in-game events. I'll be recording these points as well. At 3 to 5 innings, we're going to have a small sample size in every game. Barring extra innings, Bowser's team will play 150 innings, the others will play 102. |

Final Roster/League Thoughts
I'm using the rosters as presented on the Awards screen. Clubs have between 10-13 player on the roster. Each team has two players who are 'Stars'. The have a special batting and pitching skills not available to the rest of the players. (I call them 'Stars' because their extra skills are called star skills.) These two players also function as the starting and No. 1 reliever for the club.
Players are rated in 4 categories on a 1 to 10 scale. Differences between players of similar ratings are in the scouting report. It appears, with batting ratings, that they are a hybrid rating. Both contact and power weighted for an overall rating. Hope that made sense. The 'running skills' are mostly worthless—they just increase the chance of the ball getting further away in a collision. Fielding skills, however are useful! There are no substitutions, the 9 starters play the whole game. They can move around, but other than pitching changes, there isn't any 'strategic' defensive replacements. I also should point out, in all the games I have played against the CPU at all the levels: I have never seen a base on balls. I've seen hit by pitch, but never a walk. Probably happens with human against human, but this is a pitch to contact league. Ditto with steals. Since I don't have replay option in this game, I may make a mistake or two in score keeping. I hope these errors are minimal. Since the game only tracks runs (and hits on some background scoreboards!) all hit/error calls are mine. Is a ball misplayed because of a giant egg an error or hit? That's the kind of choices I face. |

Day 1
Both clubs suffered poor defense at second with Baby Peach and Red Yoshi committing two errors for five unearned runs. The second error by Baby Peach was the biggest. In the top of the 6th, with two out and two on, Yoshi's Egg Swing was misplayed by Baby Peach into a 3-base error. Birdo worked a perfect 1.1 IP for the relief win.
The Muscles took a 2-0 lead with home runs by Waluigi and Red Koopa Troopa. Blue Kritter slammed a 3-run shot in the bottom of the second. The Wilds sealed the deal with a game ending 4-6-3 double play.
The scoring came early: A total of 4 home runs in the first two innings. While Mario eventually found his groove, getting the last 9 batters in a row; Bowser needed his defense to close out the game. The Fireballs saw double plays end the 3rd, 4th and 5th. Last edited by Denny Lemaster; 04-05-2017 at 11:47 AM. |

Day 2
The Wilds almost pulled off the win in regulation. Down 4-1 in the bottom of the 3rd, Funky Kong blasted a 2-run home run. Three singles later, the score was tied, with the winning run on third. Birdo was able to induce the ground out to put the Eggs in extras for the second straight game. Birdo lead off the 5th with a double and came home on Blue Shy Guy's RBI single. The Wilds put the tying run on 3rd with only one out. Kritter then lined to short, allowing Blue Yoshi to double off King K. Rool at first. Birdo moves to 2-0 in relief as Diddy Kong takes his first loss.
With two out in the top of the second, the Fireballs rattled off six consecutive hits, culminating in Blue Pianta's 3-Run Home Run. The Muscles were able to load the bases in the bottom of the second, but Green Koopa Paratroopa popped harmlessly to third base.
The Monarchs sent 11 batters to the plate in a 6-run third inning. Bowser did club a 3-Run shot to bring the Monsters within 2, but the Monarchs were able to hold on. Three errors by the middle infield did the Monsters no favors either. Toadsworth was 3-3 with 2 RBI leading the Monarchs offense.

Day 3
The Muscles' offensive woes continue, as they now have 7 straight scoreless innings. Peach and the Monarchs had no problems setting Wario and his club down. An RBI single by Daisy, followed by a double by Peach was more than enough punch to take the game.
Stepping aside from game commentary: When playing the DK Wilds, there is nothing I hated to see more than Donkey Kong stepping to the plate with a chance to tie or win the game. The big ape just seems to find that moment to punch (as he uses a boxing glove instead of a bat) the kind of tape measure home run his ancestors' ancestors' will sing songs of legend. And every time it happens, I just say to myself. "That's what DK does." Well long story short, DK leads off the 4th in a 0-0 game—to this point Mario had been dominating the Wilds bats—and the big guy punched the game winner. Because, well, that's what DK does.
The Eggs string of luck runs out as their game against the Monsters was called in the 4th. Bowser hit 2 home runs with Fire Bro and Hammer Bro adding their own blast for good measure.

Day 4
The Monarchs rang 5 straight hits to start their half of the third to take the win.
Waluigi hits a walk off homer in the 4th to give the Muscles their first win of the season. Waluigi's blast ended a streak of 10 consecutive scoreless innings for the Muscles.
Bowser was unstoppable at both pitching and defense. Racking up 4 strikeouts and hammering 2 solo shots. The Wilds mounted a last inning comeback attempt, but Bowser Jr was too much to handle in relief.

Day 5
Both Peach and Wario were outstanding on the hill, but it was the Muscles outfield who kept this game scoreless. On three occasions alone Red Koopa Paratroopa was able to steal a home run with his glove. RKPT also threw Peach out trying to stretch a single to a double. The Monarchs couldn't get that extra something to get a run home. The Muscle were quiet again with bats.
The Fireballs wasted chances early and late. Three first inning hits only netted the Fireballs a single run, stranding two men in scoring position. Mario was humming again, but was victimized for a game tying home run from Baby DK in the third. The Wilds never threatened in extras, Donkey Kong weakly popped in his two extra inning at bats. The Wilds however bent without breaking. Three double plays ended Fireball rallies. The Fireballs had an excellent chance, after Red Noki sacrificed putting runners at second and third. A weak non-scoring ground out and strikeout later the threat was over. The Wilds did get a runner to third in the bottom of the sixth, but a pop to short ended the game.
Last time the Eggs faced the Monsters, it was a blow out. The Eggs returned the favor—rattling five doubles and 2 home runs. Outfield errors by the Eggs put the Monsters up 2-0, but Birdo came on to finish the 2nd, and shut down the Monsters the rest of the way. Birdo now is 3-0, all in relief. The Monsters used 4 pitchers—3 of them seeing action in the fifth.

Day 6
The Eggs catch Daisy twice on the bases to foil Monarch rallies. Yoshi picks up his first win of the season.
Donkey Kong has a two-hit game while holding the Muscle scoreless. Wario's crew was able to get a man on base in each inning, but DK and Wilds kept the Muscles at zero. The bottom three of the Wilds line up—Blue Kritter, Kritter and Brown Kritter—all drove in a run in the second.
The Fireballs once again see opportunity after opportunity to score pass by, this time the Fireballs survived. Mario looked like he was going to win the game single handedly, homering in the 3rd and looking like an ace on the mound. The Monsters lead off the fifth with three straight hits, tying the game. Luigi made his first pitching appearance, and was lights out. In three innings, he allowed a lone single. Luigi also drove home the winning run in the 7th inning.

Just to be clear. . .
The ERA's are figured on a 3 Inning basis, not 9. Probably was 'obvious' but just wanted to make sure we're all on the same page.

Day 7
Birdo belts two home runs, driving in 5. Light Blue Yoshi add 3 more RBI. The Eggs had 4 runs before an out was recorded. Wario was being hit hard the brief time he was in, with Birdo delivering the base clearing blows. Wario did hit a solo home run. All 4 runs the Muscles have scored have been by solo home run.
Why are the Fireballs struggling? Among other reasons, bad decisions. Down 4-0 with a runner on first, after the Monarchs scored 3 in the third, Luigi laid down a bunt. Now, the prior batter, Baby Mario had tried to bunt, and Peach nearly turned a double play. So Luigi-with Mario on deck-bunts a lazy pop up right to Peach, who doubles Baby Luigi off first. Game over, Monarchs win.
While the vaunted home run power of the Wilds has not been front and center as expected, Donkey Kong has other ways to beat you. After Bowser hit his league leading 6th home run in the bottom of the first, DK picked himself up and shut the Monsters down. Donkey retired 14 of the next 15 batters to close out the game. The offense played chip away. Donkey singling in a run in third to draw within one. In the top of the fifth, Diddy Kong, Donkey and King K. Rool all had RBI hits. The Wilds had the lead and the game.

Day 8
It is at the point were the Muscle just must be waiting for the other shoe to fall. After tallying 3 runs in the second (nearly their season total to that point), Wario's group looked to gain a needed victory. These were also the first runs the Muscles have scored that wasn't a solo home run. But the Monarchs staged another last inning rally to snatch the win. Blue Toad lead off with a single, followed by King Boo's misplay of a ground ball. Baby Daisy loaded the bases beating out soft infield hit, no runs, but no out either. Petey Piranha then drove in two with a double, Daisy tied the game with a sacrifice fly. With extra innings looming, Red Toad laced the game winning single.
Both clubs were getting base hits galore in the first inning. But the Wilds took advantage of the opportunities scoring three runs on 5 hits, while the Fireballs could only muster one run on four hits. Diddy Kong homered in the Wilds' rally, with Donkey Kong adding a third inning home run—his 2nd of the year. On the hill, Donkey Kong was also good. After the fourth Fireball hit, Donkey then retired 7 of the last 8 batters.
The Eggs once again win a slug fest at Bowser Castle. The Monsters hit four home runs—two by Dark Bones and one from Bowser and Dry Bones. The Eggs had 7 extra base hits—four doubles, a triple and home run—in their offensive attack. The Eggs kept hitting gaps, keeping the Monsters outfield running all day. Yellow Shy Guy's lava assisted triple was one of the bigger hits of the day. Birdo notched win number 4 with 3.2 innings of relief. Yoshi was pulled after only 7 batters. He got the hook after Dry Bones first homer put the Monsters up 4-2. It could have been much worse for the Eggs, Yellow and Gray Shy Guy both stole home runs from the Monsters in the first. Gray Shy Guy picked up a 1 out save to preserve the win for the first place Eggs.
