Copying to a flash drive

Alright guys, I don't want to say I am fairly new around here because I have lurked for years. I do have a question that I am sure somebody can help me with.

I work 8-5 in an executive position for a newspaper overseeing marketing, sales, delivery, customer service and so forth. With that in mind, there are days that are slow. These days, I would love for OOTP Baseball to be available for me to pop open on my computer at work. However, I wouldn't want to install the game itself onto the computer beings that it is my "work computer".

However, I was wondering if it was possible for me to put the game on a USB Flash Drive and just keep the entire game file on the Flash Drive and play off of that rather than download to my work computer?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is no way to access your game without installing the OOTP18.exe file on your work computer and running it (i.e. doing a full install of the game), and it sounds like that's a do at your own risk option.

depends a bit...

you get 2 licenses, so having it on 2 computers isn't a problem..

do you have a laptop you can take with you?

or, you could install it, then delete the game directory from the pc at work.. then, run from the flash drive (usb 2.0?)..it may load slower... 3.0 will be ~hdd speed.. a bit slower, but much faster than 2.0 if working properly.

i'd turn off the cache for the flash drive, because of the large delay that will occur between when you save or backup and when the data will actually be written to the flash drive. this way when the game says "backup complete" it's actually done writing, too.

even though speeds will seem slower in your other uses, it's the real speed whether you realized it or not. ("safely remove usb" function is exactly for this reason.. and any delay is because it's still writing)

problems? comfortable editing the registry?

if game won't play from flash drive, you can make the computer 'see' it as a non-removeable drive.. .google for instructions. this will involve editing the registry... if you are careful and read twice to avoid mistyping things, it's perfectly safe to do. (haha type-o's... even i re-read and fix for registry edits!)

since it's installed and you merely deleted the directory, the registry entries remain for the license (if that's how they do it, or just re-entering it game when loaded from flash etc - never used it on 2) and the game should play from any location on that pc..

if you 'can't' install it due to work reasons... you could export those entries from your registry at home and then run that file on your pc at work.

All Reg Edits Will likely also raise some serious.. very, very serious red flags from the IT dept. regedits can be very bad and not a common occurence on a 'work' pc. so, this will not be viewed the same as running some baseball game you brought from home and being imported as they are from a file on the desktop (or wherever) as opposed to an install of some commercial sftware.

either way, they can always see what processes are running on your computer and flag any outside of the "normal" few you are expected to run... if they care, this is automated. no way to avoid it without something that renames the process. google unfortunately, that program too, will raise a flag, lol.

so, if that is the case... don't think you are being sneaky with a flash drive... you will need a non-network connected laptop or pc. even disable the hardware before you go within range of your work wifi. if they care about people not using outside software, don't try to be sneaky... if they are relaxed in a general way... go for it.
