OOTP 18 Road to Release: Challenge Mode

Then there's this...was hoping for something on Tournaments or promotion/relegation though!

I like this addition a lot. It sounds like it will really put our (in my case meager) OOTP skills to the test. I'd like to see how many of those 78 achievements I can unlock.

I understand there will be a road to release for both Tournaments and Promotion/Relegation. I am really looking forward to seeing more about those...as for the Challenge Mode, not sure I will use this. It seems like a cool idea, but I like being the commissioner of my world. Still, I may try this out just for kicks.

My challenge mode wish list...

1. Allow personalities and morale to be disabled. This is especially important for historical leagues because the player traits are assigned randomly and often don't match reality.

2. Allow storylines to be disabled.

3. Allow league evolution to be disabled.

4. Disable the feature that allows a modified injuries.txt file to be imported. If possible, challenge mode should automatically load the default injury file each time the league is loaded - even if the file is replaced in the database folder. Use a hidden file somewhere?

5. Disable the ability to edit ballparks except for cosmetic items such as field image.

It is the main reason that I pre-ordered 18. I consider promotion/relegation and tournaments to be fluff. Fortunately, we can all have what we want.

So at the end, the hyped Challenge Mode doesn't really add anything? How disappointing.

Head To Head Play

A true challenge mode would include head to head play. That is my OOTP wish!

Guys (not just you, Chico Guilbault), please keep posting these links to the Road to Release articles on Operations Sports. Is OOTPD planning to do a Road to Release of their own, or are they leaving it up to Operation Sports?

It is a great idea since this is more a single user game. In this challenge mode can you challenge other users to start in the same year for the same team and compare scores after 5 to 10 seasons? Set deadlines for ending seasons? Prizes?

This seems like it would work for a college class?

This feature won't require online profile updates? It creates challenges to compete with other?

This feature would seem to be of little use to those of us who are running a long league that have been in existence since earlier versions of OOTP.

Can you run challenge mode with leagues that are already in existence

For a while I thought they were just going to make everyone manager of the Racoons as Challenge Mode

I was thinking along those lines too but did think perhaps that is part of the challenge too. Like those who do GM only or MGR only and see how well we do. starting as a low class A MGR .

Bottomline was I thought we all would start at same spot and compare eachother in how well we did with same exact rules .... Hopes that is in the mix

The 2000 Raccoons. That might actually reduce sales for OOTP 19 though. Honest highlight of that season: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...postcount=1113

But I actually thought more along the lines of set scenarios, like, take the '62 Mets to a winning record by '65, or prevent the '92 Pirates from falling into a 20-year hole, or whatever. Best guy on the leaderboard gets bragging rights. Unless I am missing something, that's not what the mode is about at all, it's just an online place to present achievements?

Meh.

I only use Commissioner Mode to fix the few odd problems that always seem to crop up over multiple seasons of play. Going without it seems like asking for trouble if you ask me. I never considered using it "cheating" because if there is no challenge in playing the game why would I play it?

This "Challenge Mode" is just forcing me to play the way I'd be playing anyway. I don't care about badges or bragging rights and I never play online or boast about my results online.

So, for me this feature is a swing an a miss. Much like relegation and promotion and even the Negro Leagues (I only play fictional and my league was integrated the day it started in 1890 and OOTP16) But I may give historical replay a look. All in all OOTP 18 is a little underwhelming in new features as far as I am concerned but have no fear, I was in on the day it was announced. Every version gets better even in small ways and to me that is always worth the price even if the big things don't appeal.

Excellent question. Unless there's a mole someplace, I seriously doubt that Operation Sports somehow managed to scoop the OOTP development team on an OOTP feature without official approval. We're all waiting here (Okay, I'll speak for myself. I'm waiting here...) with bated breath for any updates. Should we be checking for them there instead?
