Historical Recreation

I've been toying with the idea of doing a total historic recreation for awhile and am going to give it a shot. I'm not going to use the auto-scheduler, or the auto-aging system. This will be done "old school" style, keeping track of things in a few spreadsheets.

Start Date: January 1st, 1880

Rankings and Scheduling

At first, there will be no rankings. History is very spotty for this decade. Fighters disappear (at least from boxrec.com) for a good bit of time here and there. So, no rankings. Probably not until the turn of the century when history, at least for the top guys, is more complete.

Scheduling...I'm just following their actual history right now. When a fighter fights someone not in the database, I just add the result to their record and move on. When both are in the database, I sim the fight. In the case where a fighter goes on to fight for a title, if they lose their previous fight, the winner of that fight will fight for the title instead. I'm sure this will be the beginning of a butterfly effect, causing me to rearrange schedules as the effects ripple through history. That's one of the fun things of doing it this way, the "what if?" game.

Traits and Events

Another wrench I'm throwing into this game is have a list of possible traits and events for fighters.

Example if an event: When a fighter loses by KO, there's a 10% chance he'll gain the "Shell Shock" trait - he'll get a -2 penalty to his Aggressiveness, Killer Instinct and Punching for his next 2 fights. There's also a 25% chance that the trait will be permanent.

This is, in large part, how I'll be handling aging. Fighters are at risk to these types of events. I also have the "aging" event. Not yet set on how I'll handle it, but after a certain set of parameters is met, a fighter will have an X% chance to lose a point in a few of their attributes. Something like that. I'll see how it goes.

I'm still fleshing out the events ideas (so I won't be using them at first). I''ll be adding more as I think of them and if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.

For now, I'm just going to use everyone's Prime rating.

Titles

No titles at the start. I'll start crowning champions sometime during the middle of the decade.

Anyway, let's get this started.

Oh yeah, forgot about the rules for fights. Going with history for now. I might introduce judges and 10 point scoring sooner than is historic, but for now, the referee scores the fight, and it's based on rounds. 15 round fights (all of them for now). The fighter can not be saved by the bell and only the referee can stop the fight.

(fights that are in italics were not simmed due to one fighter not being in the database)

January, 1880

Jan 2nd: Morris Grant 0-0-0 KO7 Charles Cooley 0-0-0

Jan 10th: George Godfrey 2-0-1 (2) KO2 Tommy Williams 0-0-0
Jan 10th: Jake Kilrain 4-0-0 (3) PTS3 John Hughes 0-0-0

Mar 30th: Harry Mead 2-0-0 PTS15 Bob Laxton 0-0-0

April 1880

Apr 27th: Jack Burke 4-2-0 PTS3 Abe Atterbruy 0-0-0
Apr 27th: Jack Burke 5-2-0 PTS3 Jem Gaiger 1-0-0

May 1880

May 24th: Charlie Norton 0-1-0 RTD7 Alfred Heath 0-0-0

Promoted as "Heavyweight Championship of America"
May 30th: Joe Goss 1-1-1 (1) PTS15 Paddy Ryan 0-0-0
Ref Decision: 7-4

In real life, Paddy Ryan won by decision and this was Joe Goss' last fight. Paddy Ryan goes on to fight John L. Sullivan in a fight billed as a title fight, but not until 1882 (not listed on boxrec, but is on Cyber Boxing Zone's list of fights for Sullivan).

I think I'll have Goss stay out of retirement and have him fight that fight instead. (It just so happens Goss did fight Sullivan a week before Sullivan's fight with Ryan in an exhibition).

So I already broke a rule. I saw that Mike Donovan (active from 1866 to 1896) was not in the default database. So for him, I sought out a file in the Mods forum and imported him. I guess I'll do that for any of the top guys who got missed. For the journeymen and lower, I'm not going to bother.

Had an issue with the game. A few of my fighters suddenly had empty ratings records. I updated the fighter data and it re-added the ratings records, but I had to go to each fighter and set their ratings record back to "Prime" from "Empty".

If this is an issue I'm going to have to deal with from time to time, it's going to get really old really fast.

Well, I just realized I forgot to activate all of the fighters who started in 1882. Oops.

So now I added the 1882 and 1883 fighters. I skipped some, though. The fighters who only had a few fights, all or most loses, I decided to just leave them out.
