Marlins Assistance

So, I did a random career, and am taking over the Marlins at the end of the 2016 season. I retired Fernandez because it would have felt uncomfortable other wise.

So my question is, rebuild or try to contend?

The Marlins have **** prospects, but a young solid outfield(ozuna can be very hit or miss in my past experiences though).

There is a complete absence of pitching and it almost seems wise to flip Ramos for some kind of prospects because a closer seems unnecessary on a team this bad.

They finished under .500 with Fernandez on 2016, and I assume it will get worse unless I got nuts and sign a SP for 30+mil a year.

Thoughts?

Rebuild or Contend? Really entirely up to you and what you want to do. Some people would take that team, make a few tweaks and contend. Some would strip it down and rebuild. The pieces are there for either route, just depends on what you feel like doing with them.

Well one thing is for sure. You will have to do one thing or the other. Because you can't give op Ozuna and win. Cameron Flynn and Yefri Perez are not major league bats and Francour (if you even keep him) can't play center field. Or play every day. Don't bother looking for pitching help in New Orleans or Jacksonville. Team ERA was over .400 on both.If you trade Stanton you might get enough of a return to contend if you get major league ready pitchers. A starter and reliever will do. That will only work IF Bour and Prado hit for you. Destin Hood had a decent OPS in real life at New Orleans so he might work in right field.

You might as well go for it. In real life the farm system us stripped bare above Short Season A. I imagine the game is the same. OOTP trading being what it is you probably will not get equivalent value if you sell so you might as well take a shot and maybe get a pitcher in the Rule 5 or off waivers.

I'd have done the same with Fernandez. It wouldn't feel right seeing him out there.

Yeah,

The cupboard just seems so stripped.

In real Iife their only top 100 prospect is their 2016 pick, of whom they didn't draft in game during the simulated 2016 season.

So all of the talent is in the mlb. I think contending is my only option, but I was thinking of maybe flipping for Billy Hamilton as a leadoff one - two punch with gordon, and then flipping ozuna for either a SP middle of the road guy, Santana or tanaka come to mind, or prospects that are AA or better.

I have doubts about resigning Cashner to anything other than a one year deal, I have injury rating hidden, but c'mon it's friggin Cashner...he'll get hurt.

Any mid range SP suggestions or mid to high end prospects? I try to avoid common suggestions or unrealistic ones. I've ended up with Tellez too much lol.

Thanks guys!

The real Marlins just signed Junichi Tazawa. Not a bad move to copy, especially if you let Mike Dunn go in free agency (like the real Marlins did).

I'd tear it all down and start fresh. Get as many good prospects as you can. Watch the waiver wire for interesting younger players and hope you get lucky. Spend some money on players posted in the offseason.

But then that's how I like to do things. I want to win but I want to win with my players and my style.

I think it's possible to compete, but it'd be safer to rebuild.

You can definitely compete. I did a similar thing taking on the Marlins, but I was running it to see how Fernandez did. Sadly he got injured for 8 months in 2017, and it looks like I'm gonna get the WC (with the second best record in the majors and 100+ wins).

The key to competing, I found, was flipping Stanton/Ozuna (who I find are too unpredictable), and flipping the more expensive guys for MLB ready pieces. You definitely can compete.

I don't really support rebuilding. If you're a good GM you should be able to build a sustainable winner without needing to rebuild. Flip Ozuna/Stanton/Chen for young MLB ready pieces and you can compete in the short & long term. I took over in 2016 and made the WS and I'm on pace to win 98 in 2017. Payroll is down and my key guys are under control for a while...so I mean I just don't see the point in rebuilding the Marlins.
