Thinking of taking the plunge...
I have no experience in sports sims that focus on the GM side of the game. Most sports sims I've played are like Strat O Matic Hockey or Diamond Mind baseball with no GM component. But I am a big historical hockey fan... mostly 70's and 80's NHL (and WHA). What I'd like to try in a GM game where I can install myself as GM of an NHL team circa the early or mid 1970's (a time when I followed hockey much more than I do now and had a decent handle on which players were good and which players weren't), with the teams as they were then, and then see how I can do with that team going forward. Is this doable with the FHM game? Is the game's learning curve severe? Will the teams appear exactly as they were at the point that I choose to begin? If I pick an NHL team to GM, what happens in the WHA, minor leagues, junior leagues, and leagues overseas? Will they exist in my world and, if yes, do they sim themselves or do I have to be involved with them, beyond drafting and signing players and managing my minor league team? Are there different levels of intricacy/difficulty with playing GM, so that you can be either really immersed in the nuts and bolts of the team, or just the main stuff, or somewhere in between and is it adjustable? If you don't also serve as coach, do games still get played before your eyes or do they happen *off camera*? Do players progress similar to how they did in real life or can they under/over-achieve? Can you adjust this? Can you make trades hard to make for both myself and the other teams' GM's, so that the chance of silly trades being made are lessened? Sorry, lots of questions, I know. And I know I'll have more. But I would really appreciate any feedback because, as I said, this sounds like I different type of game than I've played before. Thanks!
