Catcher's response
When you click on "visit mound", you get a dialog box that says, "I'm perfectly fine" or "I've got enough for a few more hitters" etc.
We all know most pitchers are basically BS artists when it comes to revealing their condition (read: Matt Harvey, world series) How about we get the catchers response as well? So we get two responses in the dialog box: for example, your starting pitcher is getting shellacked in the 3rd inning. In the dialog box, the pitcher gives you his BS response: "I'm perfectly fine!" Then the catcher gives the real answer: "He's got nothing tonight. Get him gone." *or* "This guy has a rag arm. Why is he still on the mound?" *or* He's got good stuff tonight, he just needs to settle down. Cool right? More immersion! |

it would be cool if the different personality types factored into how the pitcher responds. a greedy player, with low desire to win would probably want taken out to not damage his stock.
A player with a high desire to win would probably be too competitive to easily come off the mound. A player that has a history of injuries would also be more willing to comet, where a iron man would feel invincible.

I love this idea! I would add so much to the game and decision-making! Maybe your pitching coach could chime in with advice too?

I've thrown four pitches and I'm losing 3-0," Ford recalled. "Out to the mound comes (manager Casey) Stengel and he asks Yogi, 'What kind of stuff has he (Ford) got?' And Yogi says, 'How the hell do I know? I haven't caught one yet!'

I like this idea the accuracy of the Cather could be related to the catchers personality ratings.

I suppose in considering this improvement, is now the catcher as a position plays a potentially more important role than other players on the team. I would say that mimics real life, so a team may have to keep a particular catcher to keep part, or all of their pitching staff happy, even if that catcher is hitting .183 and hasn't batted in a run since the Microsoft stock scandal. Definitely should be added though!

Hah. Makes me think of this...Who was the pitcher that his manager came out to remove him, so he said, "I'm not tired at all!" and the manager said "The outfielders are" and took him out.

This was on the old EA Earl Weaver Baseball. It was a good feature and would be welcome here.

I'd submit that a healthy fragile pitcher with sufficient stamina should behave no differently than an iron man. It's an attribute not a rating.

Personality rating and his overall status (experience). A sure-fire HOFer (Carlton Fisk, for example) would likely carry more weight than the rookie call-up from AAA who's in the lineup because the starting catcher is injured and the backup guy caught the first game of a double-header. |

I remember a Reds pitcher, I think it was Pat Darcy, telling a story on MLB Network a few years ago about how Sparky Anderson came out to the mound to take him out of a game. He said, "Sparky, you can't take me out of this game. I'm fine. I feel great." Sparky replied, "You'll feel a lot better after taking a shower."

I think this would be a great idea..... Along with the input from the catcher / pitching coach.....
1) Something along the lines of a possible (doesn't happen with every visit) positive or negative boost (temporary, lasting between a few pitches and an inning or two) to stamina and/or ratings, composure, etc based on the game situation, the pitchers ratings/morale/personality, the batters ratings, the coaches temperament, etc...... 2) One way to trigger that +/- boost would be to have a choice of 3 things to "say" during the mound visit..... 1) positive encouragement (just relax, a double play and you're out of this jam) 2) negative encouragement (get your stuff together and throw strikes or I'm going to send you to the minors) 3) How do you feel / I'm just letting the reliever finish warming up. Again, the results of which you choose to say could be determined by the morale/personality and "history" (is the pitcher a veteran HOF candidate or a September call up rookie...) of the pitcher and manager..... Adding another bit of "strategy" into the decision...... Bottom line being, with the current system, the only reason for a mound visit is to warm up a reliever a bit more before a change. You have a pitcher who's pitching very badly, 3 IP, 6 hits, 5 walks.......you visit the mound and he says "I'm perfectly fine, let me pitch please!"..... Obviously you're not "perfectly fine".... but the only option you have is to replace him or let him keep pitching and hope it works out. I hope that makes sense |
