Player Names Changed?

Hello Community. I have an online league with my father and after I imported his managers, I simmed, as usual. However once it was complete, I noticed EVERY player in our world, including minors now have completely different names. When I click on a player's history, it shows their original name but clicking on that name, the player's profile has the new name. In this screenshot, this player's original name was Jeremy White.

Can anyone tell me how/why this happened and how to correct it?

that's odd... all the ratings and stats the same?

maybe a lil error in the import? if yo have a backup, try again. worse comes to worst, you can export players from backup and broken one... re-paste first/last names over the correct player id's and it should fix itself on import.

no idea how all that pertains to an online league and what files you'd have to desseminate.

It's either a file corruption or a different names.dat file was accidentally copied to the league folder. Either way, you need a backup to fix this.

I will try this idea and hopefully that will to the trick. Sounds tedious but overall probably the best solution. Thanks!

i would do what markus suggests first, if you do have a backup.

he knows which files contain that data and whether it can simlply be inserted from a possibly older backup... new players might be a problem though, eh? i guess they didn't have previous names, though... so, they'd have no name or would it auto-generate to fix it?

anyway, if you resort to spreadsheets and import/export option:

i'd sort by playerID once imported the backup and current data into a spreadsheet (both sets for copy/paste to work correctly). this will help with new players that may or may not exist since the backup = you may be copying all but the last X number of first/last names... if you haven't purged your db, newer players since the backup should have higher playerid values. ... if you have purged.. wow i'm not sure this would be worth your time, lol. you can skip any sorting if the backup is "current" - probably the same day, at least.

use the spreadsheet efficiently:
you can highlight the top cell, then shift-click at the bottom to quickly highlight. or even faster, know the first cell, say C2. then, scroll down by dragging scroll bar quickly to bottom. OR, type the cell values into the selection input = instant large selection. when it's more than a page or two of data, the shift-click method is cumbersome to say the least.

so, copying and pasting a couple columns will take a very short period of time. if accents get screwed up, save it as a different utf-X format... if not sure, save as all 3 when you are done pasting correct names over the current data export sheet.

google locking the window by row or column... probably not useful here, but great to keep labels in sight while scrolling through thousands of rows/columns.

i used a free openoffice calc spreadsheet. excel may be different but will do all the same stuff, too. if you know a little vb you can really make use of spreadsheets.

Is it possible to load my backup without overwriting my current version (with the wrong names)?

You rename your current version in the saved games folder.
You can also copy it and rename it so you have 2 versions of your current file.
Your dad can run the sim that you just ran on his end and upload his league file for you to DL. That may fix it also.

I'm not sure him running it would do us any good as he has already imported my version and he has the incorrect names as well.

it's not archived in anyway. so, merely go into the directory of the backup, find the name of the file that markus mentioned. copy and paste it into the current saved game directory's counterpart of that file. if your dad doesn't have the backup, email him the file and he can drop it into his saved game directory, too.

I just tried to copy the names.day folder from the backup and copied it into my current game. Wrong names still populated.

I have the players.csv excel file for both versions but I cannot find how to change those csv files so I can re-import name & ethnicity database...

select column with playerid, select sort... it should ask to sort all adjecant cells, which you definitely want to click yes to. google "sort" and name of spreadsheet program for how to do it.

now, you can copy/past first and last names column from the "correct" list over the one with wrong names. this should fix it as it was in the other player export.

if there is a mismatch on playerid #'s, sorting should avoid any problem. go ahead and save the file and import back into your game with the new first/last names pasted.

I've been able to do this (thanks!) but since the file is a .csv, it won't import. I'm almost wondering if I should follow Questdog's nameset post...

first, make sure it's "saved as" the correct format.

it's a db so it shouldn't matter, but just in case sort by team id or however it was to begin with. if you deduce that is the cause of the problem, start over without sorting and change the names... it's pooped out sorted by organization then free agnets, if i recall, so it can't be too bad. you can skip the bulk of FA as a compromise, i bet.

mold your correct data to match format of the bad data, then copy paste. or selective copy paste, whichever is less work.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "following Questdog's nameset post", but importing Questdog's names is not going to fix this as it will not change any player names who are already created.

This is unfixable and you need to go back and play from a good older save. If this is from a file corruption issue, there is probably more than just mixed-up names broken. If this is from a wrong .dat file copied into the save folder (not sure how that could happen), it would be easily fixable by just copying the right .dat file back in there, but there is no way to know if that is the case or if the file was corrupted in transfer, so the best bet is to ditch the new save and fire up an old one.

That'd be so hilarious if everyone in a baseball league just decided to change their names at random.

Thanks for confirming my fears! So far, everything else in the game appears to be the same. My back up was the beginning of playoffs so not too bad.

Do what Joe Girardi does. Slap a y on the end of everyone's name.
