Cartwright State Hardball Association: Year I
I’ve long tried to start a season that would kind of simulate the summers spent as a batboy for my uncles’ Fast Pitch Softball teams of the late 70s-early 80s. I’m not saying this attempt will be any more successful than my prior ones, but it is worth a try.
Basics: 104 clubs across the fictional State of Cartwright. Teams are in 9 Conferences and a grouping of “unaffiliated” teams. 96 game regular season, with 32 clubs making a post season tournament. The 9 Conference winners make the tournament with 23 at large clubs. League settings approximate mid-1950s, with early 19teens financials. Free agency after 1 year service, 25 man active rosters, 15 man reserve rosters. I will be running/managing the Impsfolly Hill Seals of the Mid East Conference. |

Year I Predictions and Preseason
Given the size of the State Hardball Association, printing full standings would be a bit overwhelming. Mostly I'll focus on just the Mid East Conference.
Spring Season:
Best Spring Record
Worst Spring Record
Predictions
Impsfolly Hill is projected to have the worst record in the SHA Projected Tournament Teams

Spring Season Stats
I don't manage the spring season the same way as I do during the regular season. However, the club is very slow-footed so the stolen base total may not be so far off. We did seem very good at turning double plays and throwing runners out from the outfield. I plan on carrying 15 position players and 10 pitchers.
Mayhaps a more 'realistic' lineup and bullpen usage will help with the overall results for the club. I really hope so.

Series 1: April 15-16
Frustrating or promising? Reasons for optimism or pessimism? I’m not totally sure what the take away from this first series.
Cullie Kronholm was the most consistent pitcher in the spring, and he continued that work into the regular season. A solo shot and double from Inveringham Fell’s Marlin Hotham being the blackest marks in Kronholm’s ledger. Kronholm had pitched, in the old cliché, good enough to win-striking out 6, walking 2 and allowing 5 hits in 7.1 innings pitched. The offense just wasn’t there however. Both runs we scored were the results of the Blitz’s fielding miscues rather than our offensive proficiency. Our defense saved us a couple times, turning 3 double plays and cutting down a runner at the plate. In the 11th, it was Marlin Hotham’s bat which doomed us. His leadoff double, followed by Vance Yantis’s double provided the winning run.
Game 2 was another tightly fought contest. Starter Tedd Della Pietro was in the strike zone in his 5+ innings of work-9 hits and 7 strike outs. I pulled him in the 6th, after he allowed the second Blitz run. The 4 relievers used (Cooling-Leitzel-Peden-Medenwaldt) shut out Inveringham Fell down for the next 8 innings. In the 8th inning, we put together the first instance of sustained offense of the season. Duwen Harel doubled in a run and Odell Mowday’s sacrifice fly chased in the other. The next few innings were a mix of close calls and 1-2-3. Inveringham Fell left the bases loaded in the 10th and 13th, while we left them loaded in the 9th. Finally, in the bottom of the 13th we loaded them again with only 1 out. Rafael MacShannahan was able to loft a fly ball long enough to score the winning run.
The final game was a mix for us. Starter Reek Bossie allowed 4 hits to start the game and we never really could get back into the game. With our bullpen exhausted, I brought in Bobby Shawn, who is slated to be our 4th starter. I could afford to do so with the next day being an off day. Shawn gave us 5 shutout innings with 7 strike outs (and 3 walks) to keep us close. But the offense was still stuck in the mud.

Series 2: April 19-21
A step forward and then a slide back.
After getting 4 extra base hits in our first three games, our hitters found the range against Port Dripander. Odell Mowday had 3 doubles by himself. Cullie Kronholm again had a strong outing. I think we have a good chance to win every time he takes the mound. I was hoping this was the beginning of the end of our offensive doldrums.
Game two was reminiscent of how the season began, very tightly played. Della Pietro was able to go a bit longer than his prior start, giving me hope he can be a solid 2/3 starter over the course of the season. I was feeling ok with turning the game over the bullpen, they had been fairly solid so far. Layton Leitzel got his 4 players with no issues. J. T. Peden wasn’t as effective. A leadoff double to Mike Shawver proved too tricky to overcome. I was disappointed, but not surprised, when Shawver eventually scored on a sac fly. But Peden followed with a wild pitch and a line drive single to drop the game. Our margin for error seems to be very narrow.
The rubber game was another mix of frustrating and encouraging. Reek Bossie was supposed to start, but wasn’t rested enough to go. Cameron Mendenwaldt was dropped in and did a serviceable job, but wildness and defensive let downs put us behind the 8-ball. Our offensive frustrations continue: 10 hits and only 2 runs. I was buoyed by Kade Uhl getting 3 hits, pulling his average from .111 to .227.

Transactions
With no trades in the SHA, unsigned players and the reserve roster are the only ways to improve the club.
Probably the least effective thing I did was make offers to two FA pitchers. Our staff does not have healthy amount of stamina, even our starters are on the low end of stamina. Right hander Burton DeTerra isn't a top of the line reliever, but could be middle innings eater. Lefty Kent Huepenbecker is, well, starting depth. If I lose one of the 5 guys with (borderline) starter stamina I'll need an arm to take a turn. Huepenbeck will sit on the reserve roster until needed. DeTerra might be slotted onto the active roster. J. T. Peden is sent to the reserve roster. His 3.00 WHIP in two outings might be jumping the gun, but I don't have a lot of room for error with my offense. I considered putting Rupert Potrzeba on reserve too, but didn't have two clear reservist to bring up. Hurst Loging gets the call, he had a rough start to the spring season, but looked good over his last 5 appearances. Infielder Rafael MacShannahan and Erick Goshorn are taken off the active roster. Goshorn probably is being scapegoated--heaven knows he isn't the only one struggling. MacShannahan is one second basemen too many. I think Cristoval Gregorio can give us the power we lack, but his 0-12 to end the spring kept him off the opening day roster. J. J. Rainone is almost a dart board selection. |

Wow. That was the quickest I've been fired. I suck at drafting and running a bullpen. Three straight late blown leads and I'm history.
