GM and Owner Contract Extension Negotiations
I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I think having the ability to negotiate your contract extension as a GM with the owner rather than have the owner giving you a contract at the end of the season in which you have no say would be a nice touch.
There are times where I am entirely unsure on whether or not I would be offered a contract extension at the conclusion of a season so I think having the ability to negotiate an extension would help you plan your future out a lot more smoothly whether it is with your current team or not. This would be more beneficial in negotiating length of term rather than salary as salary is essentially just a number in the game. I think better bargaining tools could be things like allowing the owner to have more say in decisions, cutting the budget, giving promises that you'll achieve better results sooner, etc. in exchange for longer length of term. There could be an indicator tied to the owner's current mood in terms of how willing he is to negotiate a contract with you. The owner can take into account your reputation as a GM and perhaps your longevity to that particular team and perhaps that could sway him to negotiate a contract with you mid-season or even with a year remaining on your contract. Maybe the owner likes you so much that he just forwards you a blank cheque and you can essentially get whatever you want. And if he's not willing to do it, then you know that you have to have a big year to impress the owner to change his mind. Maybe you trade all your good prospects at the trade deadline for established stars and make a push for the playoffs. Maybe you trade your stars for prospects and your owner agrees with you that you are the right person for the rebuild and is willing to negotiate a contract extension regardless. The current model could still be implemented as the owner can give you a "take it or leave it" contract at the end of the season even if he's not totally impressed with your progress. |
