Question re: Non-Playoff League

I've got a fictional promotion/relegation league I'm pretty happy with, and I've set it up with no playoffs. It's just the way I want it, but my owner is unhappy with me because, in spite of finishing top of the table, I didn't "make the playoffs".

Has anyone else found themselves in this situation? I'm torn between adding a playoff series to keep the game happy or accepting that one day I may get fired for unjust cause.

Thanks for any advice.

PS. I'm switching over to 17 as you read this, in case it's relevant.

Unrelated to your question but how do you handle relegation?

The core of it is simply that I have one "league" with two 10-team divisions: One division is called "Premier League" and the other is the "Second League". Between seasons, I swap one team from each division. The good teams eventually gravitate towards the "Premier League" division.

I also toss in a few more perks to make the Premier League the cool club. I give cash bonuses to every team in the offseason, and the amounts are greater for the Premier teams. I also give extra balls in my draft lottery to Premier teams (I determine my own draft order outside the game). Since both leagues are actually divisions within the same league, they draft from the same pool.

Minor league affiliates for all teams never change.

I also find the team (Premier or Second League) with the best seat-fill percentage and give them a 10% bump in seating capacity for the next year. This isn't germane to the promotion/relegation discussion, but it might be interesting to some.

Feedback is welcome, as I'm sure there are flaws in this setup. For instance, I haven't figured out when the best time is for handing out my cash bonuses to the teams. I think the Cash Maximum setting (and possibly the team owners) end up erasing some of that cash.

Anyhow, I'm happy to keep exchanging ideas re: promotion/relegation. It's a great way to play.

I'd also like to know if anyone has any ideas re: my original question: does anyone else play with no playoffs, either in a promotion or traditional structure?

I typically start a fictional league with 4 teams and expand and don't use playoffs. I usually simulate until I'm ready to expand to build up some history and then create a playoff system. If I remember correctly the one time I played pre-expansion I encountered some sort of problem, I think with the history updating.
