Current Year Stats Meaning

Looking at the settings, I have wondered why about this. What do the current year stats mean? Isn't the ratings a "proper" reflection on how a player is? I can see where last year and 2 years ago, to dictate rise/fall.

But what is the purpose of looking at this current year's stats.

Just to parallel real life, I think. We kind of have an idea of how good a player's skills are (ratings), but we always look at stats, too, to see how they're doing at the moment.

So lets say......

Ratings are set to 60, this year is 20, last is 15, 2 years is 5.

What is it "measuring" when it looks at this years stats?

What would the difference be if i set it to Ratings 70, this year 0, last 20, 2 years ago 10.

Sorry if I am making this more difficult than it probably is

It uses them to determine how good a player is. In your example, it would weight ratings and past stats slightly more into the equation and ignore this year's stats completely.

Ratings don't equate exactly to how a player does. A player with high ratings can have a bad year (or bad years). If the AI ignored stats completely, you could get offered in trade a guy hitting .210 for one hitting .300, for example, even if their ratings are comparable. Some people might not mind that, while others might.

No, randomness plays a part.

The players' component skill ratings (contact, power, eye, stuff, control, etc.) are the input into OOTP's algorithms that determine the outcomes on the field. You can think of them like weighted dice rolls. A batter with a high contact rating will be more likely to have a higher batting average over the course of the year than a player with a low contact rating, but there is always a chance, however slim, that the strikes out in his next at-bat (or "roll"). This provides the variation inherent in the game.

The player evaluation settings you are referring to in the game options are for determining how computer-controlled teams evaluate players in signings, trades, line-up construction, etc. Just like a human, you can expect computer-controlled teams to consider players' ratings and past performance (stats). This options screen lets you determine how much the AI weighs one or the other. If you don't have any particular reason to think the AI is making bad decisions, feel free to leave these settings at their defaults. These settings have no impact on how well players do or don't play.

The current, last year, 2 years ago stats are used as weighted guides. They have 0 effect on the play on the field for this season. Just the current ratings.

AND,

A gm will look at the ratings, and the 3 seasons of stats to determine how valuable a player is in trades, signing, etc?

Correct. The setting you're talking about determines how the AI values players. Think of it as how the AI GMs use information from their scouts, current stats, and stats from the two previous seasons to develop an opinion about a player. The higher a value you place on each of those things, the more heavily the AI will factor that into its opinion.

It doesn't have anything to do with how the players actually perform.

I have decided last year's stats are just as important as the current year, and therefore have decided to go 30/30/30/10.

I was using 40/25/25/10...which is probably just as good

Colonel, I am curious. Just as important, why?

I am now, with again thanks to all that helped me, now doing 40,30,20,10.

I would just like to know your logic.

I used to do 40/30/20/10 also, but I feel the current and past year should be weighted equally. I feel the "last year" component is just as important as the current year. The current year is prorated, but I would argue the year two weight and current year combined equally give the AI a better gauge on a player's worth.
