Questions about changing position
I have a prospect in one of my leagues that I drafted in the first round as a catcher. He projects very well as a hitter but his catching ratings are just average (4/5 for arm and ability out of 8 point scale). Even though he has even worse ratings at 3B and OF, his overall and potential rating goes up when I change his position to 3B and LF (he has no experience at either). I've also noticed that his numbers have gone up significantly since I moved him to 3B. So my questions are:
1. Are defensive positions like catcher and SS weighted more towards fielding, while other positions weigh batting more? 2. Does putting a player at a less demanding position increase their batting stats? |

First, don't use overall for anything beside sorting, filtering and basic things. start focusing on individual traits (ratings) and what they translate to on the field results-wise.
well if you have ratings relative to position, you should expect a change. yes, speed, baserunning and defense do affect overall/potential. so, if you change from LF to RF and the new primary defensive position rating is lower, the overall rating may drop a certain amount depending on circumstances. i don't think it is a big deal unless they are really horrendous. 1) but affecting overall - not sure, and it really doesn't matter what the overall changes to, they are still the same player with a new facade that's all. the overall may account for defense a tad more for catcher than other positions. but again, an aesthetic change to Overall, like ratings being relative or overall changing due to a change of position, doesn't change the player's performance in any way. they will hit based on their contact and such, and they will paly defense based on their positional rating. mutually exclusive concepts - offense and defense relative to a position player. 2) not at all, unless you let them get fatigued. some positions get fatigued faster. this is why their stats may drop... not because they play the position though... it's due to tiredness. this is an example of correlation but not causation.
