End of Year One; Owner Goals
I ran the Yankees through the 2016 season, totally overhauled the roster and was eliminated from the playoffs in the final week, finishing with an 84 win season.
I got a 31 out of 100 score (yikes) but accomplished two of my three ownership goals- I secured a 'team leader' in Buster Posey... and I extended Carlos Beltran, much to my chagrin, and obviously missing the playoffs was my failure. If I win enough, how important is satisfying the ownership goals? After forcing me to extend Carlos Beltran last year, now they want me to extend A-Rod another year. Like, I'm a Yankees fan, I like these guys well enough, but stop burdening me with 40 year olds! I get that zany ownership (especially Steinbrenner variety) is part of the real deal, but I'd prefer to put off resigning Alex unless the season goes poorly and I have to curry favor with ownership. If I'm a playoff team and I do everything else they ask me, do you reckon letting Alex go is okay? I did cut Sabathia and Teixeira midseason, because both were at the bottom of my roster and getting paid a lot to do very little. Team morale plummeted when I cut Teixeira, but we rebounded. If Beltran becomes dead wood I will just cut him this year- I assume I cannot resign Alex and then cut him (which would be stupid) just to befuddle ownership, right? I probably could resign him and cut him next season, which might not be bad if he stays a 3 star player, but... I dunno, just spitballing. Thanks for any insight you can offer! |

I haven't played with the owner goals yet, but I DO know you can turn them off if you want.
![]() To me, sounds like a neat feature idea that needs a little work for the next version.

I just sort of want to know how much leeway I might have with ownership. If I win the division and lose in the ALCS but don't give Alex a new contract is is possible that ownership is like 'no sweat, you did well!' or is there a good chance they are gonna be like 'we told you to resign him, we would have won the world series if you had given him another year, you're fired!' |

Even with the owner goals enabled, I have not found any negative issues other than the "berating" the owner gives at the end of a season, especially when someone is not signed to an extension. I have played with this option enabled for a few seasons
2015 thru 2021 and I have not been fired by not signing an over age, over paid player to an extension even though my record is hovering around .500. But of course this all depends on the "owner's" personality. |

i quit using owners goals when he told me to trade for a locally born player. i did, and two days later that player suffered a career ending injury. Owner wanted another local, but the guy i got was at best a bench warmer. That didn't satisfy him and he then wanted a Cy Young winner to bolster the rotation, and when i had to trade our best prospect for one, he threatened to fire me (except i had cannot be fired check.) Too bad i couldn't throw that in HIS face. Starting next season, i disabled owner goals. Just wasn't worth the theatrics for me.

Haha cannot argue with that.
I'm sticking with my initial plan of just ignoring the order for the time being. I'm getting close to Spring Training of year two, and I've built my roster like A-Rod is an immovable object. At least he can still play an adequate third base in OOTP! OOTP has also helped me understand why the Yanks were able to get Starling Castro so cheaply. He didn't have a bad year for me, but his rating has eroded to 1.5 stars (2.5 potential) by my scout's eyes, and when I offer him in trade I get hit with the "I'M NOT PAYING FOR YOUR OVERPRICED VETERANS!" spiel... dude is 26! But slow and lacking big power. Dustin Ackley quickly took the strong side of the platoon on my Yankees. I'd rather have signed Brett Lawrie to be a more useful spark plug, that could cover second and third and pinch run but... alas. Castro is an anchor. |

Accomplishing your owner goals gives you an added benefit of an improved Budget next season.
