Would this be the best/most sought after free agent ever?
Just turned 28 years old a little over a month ago and has 2 MVP's, 5 Silver Sluggers (2 different positions) 5 All-star appearances and a Gold Glove to his credit. He also just won the Triple Crown for 2045 (a year in which he also won the MVP, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove and was an All-Star).
Unable to come to terms with the Expos after signing a 1 year extension after last season, Dick is set to become a free agent in a little over a week. What would you throw at him? Any predictions as to what he gets? Keep in mind this is modern day MLB, and in my league, teams have anywhere from $120-$220 million budgets. I'll keep anyone who is interested posted. |

My god how did you let him escape you. Was it a manager conflict, because I'd have fired the skipper in a heartbeat to retain someone like that!
That said I'm guessing he'll draw 25-30 p/y. |

Teams apparently had no interest in his initial demands. He was requesting $42.5 million per over 9 years. Towards the start of Spring Training his demands came down a bit and he settled on a contract his the Dodgers. I believe they were the only team that had the available funds in my entire league..
He's actually underpaid considering the players in my league making more than him. This guy is THE guy, no doubt about it. 14 players are making more than him. |

My money is on him gambling on getting a larger offer in free agency, and he lost. If I had to guess, he turned down a huge extension a year ago from the Expos when he settled on the 1 year deal.

Was he smart enough to at least get an opt-out?

No opt out which is surprising, but the 5th year of the deal is a player option. He'll be 31 when he has to make the choice to play his 32 year old season in LA, so I suppose he can even sign a mega contract with a team then as well. He'll still be reasonably young.
Only 7 games in to 2046 so very small sample size, but he's enjoying another nice start to the year. .407, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 1.160 OPS. He seems to be good for a 1.000 OPS yearly. |

Just another "normal" year for Dick. 3rd consecutive MVP, this time in the NL. 4th straight season with an OPS over 1.000. It will be a shame if he doesn't win a World Series. He's been there twice, but both times the Expos came up short. The Dodgers lost in the NLDS this year.
Oh, and yes, he's added a badass stache.

Not to hijack your thread or anything, but I'll hijack your thread by saying that a lot of players in my current league (in 2025) have switched to that same moustache. I think it would be hilarious if there was a hidden "facial hair trend" setting in the AI somewhere...

Ask him what he wants. Pay a little under for years 1-2, pay a little over for the rest, give him an 'opt out' after year two and let him walk, take the draft pick, get the best 2 years of his career at slightly under market value.

Sorry for constantly bumping my own thread, but Dick has won his 4th consecutive MVP. I think he might be putting himself in the conversation for greatest of all-time in my fictional MLB that began in 1901.

Indeed. I rarely get players that can consistently post a 1.000+ OPS in the modern era. And when I do they're usually injury-prone, which Bill here definitely is not. Which injury settings do you use for the league? Also, his AAA stats were good but not great. Did his abilities go through a huge jump when he was 22? |
