Fabl2: 1878
FABL 1878 Preseason News and Notes
1878 sees the entrance of 2 new teams to the league. The Pittsbugh Pirates will play in Forbes Field and joins the Western League, along with being named the final charter member of the future National League. The Washington Senators, who have been tagged to join the American League, will play in RFK Stadium and join the Eastern League. Future charter AL teams have also been announced for New York and Chicago -- they will be the next wave of expansion. The schedule makers are going to have a harder and yet easier task. The 1878 schedule calls for 90 games -- thats 10 games against each of 9 opponents, returning to the 1874 high mark. FABL commish Jamie Wilking has ordered that this season all series go 5 games - from Monday to Friday each week except the all star week, as the game will be played on Sunday, Monday will be the day off, and the following series will be played from Tuesday to Saturday. Free Agency was practically quiet this season ... none of the major standouts were loose this year. DRAFT: Brooklyn, by virtue of the worst 1877 record, grabbed SS/P John Montgomery Ward with their first choice. The Cubs choice (#2) was pitcher Jim McCormick. Other notables included pitcher The Only Nolan joining Pittsburgh with the 4th choice, Detroit adding C Charlie Bennett at #5, OF Mike "King" Kelly selected 6th by the Giants, Cleveland pouncing on 3B Ned Williamson with the 9th choice, and the Red Sox closing the first round with Abner Dalrymple. The Cubs second round choice was RF Russ McKelvy (filler). DEALS: Stocking Pittsburgh and Washington allowed me to pull of (in one case flat out rig) deals that netted the Cubs 3B Ned Williamson and LF Abner Dalrymple (I promise I won't raid all the stars in the future like this, but to get my team closer to being all Cubs, I had to do this...) Since I wasn't having any success having Washington sign the pitchers I wanted to give them, I forced the Dalrymple deal. Williamson was plucked by the Pirates and sent to me with Cub junk for Henry Luff (honorary Cub) and non-Cub junk. Coming up: FABL 1878 standings and reports |

Cubs Team Notes:
UTIL Cap Anson .294-0-40 -- ended season on DL with a fractured hand 1B Cal McVey .317-1-59 -- not bad for being in such a slump to open the season. 2B Ross Barnes .388-4-66 3B Deacon White .345-3-61 LF Abner Dalrymple .418-0-60 RF Paul Hines .270-2-42 SP Jim McCormick 17-9, 2.10 SP Al Spalding 20-11, 2.49 SP Cherokee Fisher 17-12, 3.60 Anson, White, 2B Bob Ferguson, C Joe Quinn, and CF Bob Addy are all FA's that I will try to re-sign. Hopefully I will have more than 25 players on my roster that are true Cubs. Coming up: FABL2 1879 -- and tracking players to the 1000 hit mark. |
