Rule 5 draft Q

Quick question...

If I have a player that is eligible for the rule 5 draft that has an injury, but could possibly be placed on the 60 day DL, can they be drafted away if I elect to place him on 60 day DL? I have a player in late November with an 8 week injury who is currently NOT on my 40 man roster, but eligible to be plucked during Rule 5. Should i just put him on my 40 man roster instead of placing on 60 day DL? I have limited slots, and want to try and maximize my 40 man slots as best as possible.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

I am not certain, but I believe that the only way you can prevent your player being eligible for the Rule 5 draft would be to place them on your 40-man roster. I do not think they would necessarily be "protected" from the draft if they are on the 60-day DL. As far as I understand it, when a player on your 40-man roster is placed on the 60-day DL, it merely opens up a spot on your 40-man roster. However, I think that this is all the 60-day DL does; it provides a roster option for players with long term injuries without having those players take up 40-man roster space.
Of course, I am merely providing an educated guess on this. I could be wrong but hopefully someone can either back me up, or provide a better answer than I can. It is a good question, though.

There's no DL in the off-season, so they'll have to be on the 40 man roster on rule 5 day.

Injured players can be drafted.

Even if there was a 60-day DL the objective is to have players on the 40-man roster if you don't want them drafted.
