98% of MLB data ever collected

"Here's a fascinating statistic: When the Cardinals and Cubs played the opening game of the 2015 season, the first game that Statcast recorded the location and movements of every player on the field -- along with the spin rate, velocity and movement of every pitch, plus various components of the hitter and the ball in play -- 98 percent of the known data in the history of baseball had just been documented. In one game." - David Schoenfield, ESPN

Sabermetrics' impact grows as baseball delves deeper into the numbers - SweetSpot- ESPN

On the flip side, maybe not a about the speicific movements and such, but there still so much more to learn about the game too. It's just an incredibly deep game with so many quarks and things we just don't know about yet.

So, wait a minute. When I used to play Pursue the Pennant -- OFFline with the beautiful red, white and blue cards -- and I would use index cards to track L/R splits for batters and pitchers and PvB matchups (!), I wasn't tracking all of the data???! I was a slacker evidently.

Yes, you were. But now you're here, and so everything's fine.

Very cool article Wolf - was just talking about that kind of next-gen stats with a friend the other day.

Most things have quite a few quarks, I think you meant "quirks"

All I wanna know is what's the other 2% not being tracked? I read the whole article and it didn't answer the obvious next question...

I think it was saying that basically 150 years of baseball history fit into the 2% of data, and that one game was the other 98%.

In the future when you go to a draft combine they'll sit you in a chair, attach a bunch of wires to you, analyze, then send you on your way.
