Managers
So when looking at Managers, what do the descriptions speak to? Do they influence how a player develops in the minors and even the majors. Some guys like defense, some speed, some power and so on. What do these Management Styles below equate to? or do they equate to anything.

Taking guesses here...
--Conventional. Managers don't do anything crazy here. Sluggers bat in the middle of a lineup. Speed guys bat at the top of the order. Guys who can't hit bat 8/9 in a lineup. Strategy is probably more based on available talent than any specific preferences. --Tactician. Probably somewhat similar to conventional style, but you may see your batters work counts against starters to run up pitch counts if an opponent has a weak or tired bullpen, for example. If your opponent has a weakness that plays perfectly to the strengths of your team (for example, you have a lot of good runners, and the pitcher is a soft-tosser and his catcher isn't good at throwing out baserunners, more stolen bases are likely called for in that game) your manager may make decisions based on exploiting those factors. --Small ball. Lots of walks, hit-runs, sacrifice at-bats, some stolen bases. Works well with teams from the Dead Ball Era, or teams without a lot of sluggers. --Sabermetric. Highest OBP guys placed at top of lineup, trying to maximize their plate appearances, and oportunities to get on base and score. --Unorthodox. Managers who will try seemingly crazy stuff once in a while to try to catch their opponents off guard. Defensive shifting would have once been unorthodox. Having a #5 hitter try to drop down a surprise bunt, that's unorthodox. Maybe I am way off, but that is how I read those descriptions. |

I think they do impact how a player develops. Maybe it's my imagination, but guys who are asked to steal more (smallball) seem end up with a higher steal rating. Other effects may happen?

Unless it has changed from 15 Managers affect the strategies used in games. Managers who have teams that compliment their tendencies tend to win more. Coaches affect how players develop. The more the players are suited to the strengths of the coaches the greater the influence is.
