Starting to feel like FPSBB

I don't know about anyone else, but this game reminds in terms of excitement and overall package like those old Front Page Sports Baseball games. It is nice finally after so many years to finally find another baseball game that gives me the same feeling as that old game did.

I liked FPSB too, despite the persistent problem that game had with placing players in odd positions in the computer players' lineups. Remember Barry Bonds always batting leadoff in FPSBB98? OOTP5 does have a great feel to it. I think the sound effects really add a lot to the sense of excitement. I love it when I hear the STEEEEERIKE! call when Billy Wagner blows a batter away.

Karl Marx, you're dead on right about that. I'm playing with the totalminors roster patch and I'm seeing a few weird lineups: just played against Colorado and the computer has Todd Helton leading off and Jay Payton batting fourth. Saw a few other similar things but can't recall right the particulars right now.

I'm not worried about it too much though, because I think the totalminors patch is a beta that just added real names, with ratings tweakings to come soon. The game is great so far.

Barry Bonds hit leadoff for many years in the majors, and was a great leadoff hitter.

Yes satchel, you're absolutely right, but by 1998 he had been a #3 hitter for years already, and there was no logical reason for the computer to have him lead off on that team. It was a bug, imo.

Yeah but on a lot of these things (just like my Alex-Cora-for-Ben-Sheets thread), you're looking at it from the perspective of the fans.

You know these players. You see the name "Todd Helton" or "Barry Bonds" ... or "Alex Cora" ... and you know who these people are, what they have done their entire career, and where they are at this stage in their career.

The computer looks at ratings. The name means nothing to the computer. We (including myself) are all expecting this game to be just like playing against a human being, which it never will be. You do your best to create a game that accurately takes ratings into account and a roster whose ratings accurately reflect real-life performance.

Look at Helton. He is rated a "B" in stealing. So is Bonds. They are both potential .400 hitters. Rickey Henderson used to hit home runs. He still led off. Imagine you're a computer. Step one, ignore their names, because you're a computer. You don't know who these players are. You see a guy who can hit .400 and still 25, 30 bases. Wouldn't you lead him off?

Perhaps there should be something that takes power into account when making lineups. But you can't really blame the CPU for putting those guys at the top of the lineup.

Karl Marx, of course I agree with you, but when I took a look at the game's ratings for Helton and Payton bulldog's point makes sense. Check out these comparative OOTP5 ratings:

player avg/2b/3b/hr/bb/k speed/steals

Helton 6/7/3/5/7/5 E/B

Payton 5/4/9/4/3/6 D/C

So in the OOTP5 world Helton is better at getting on base and into scoring position but Payton has better power if you look at hr and triples together. Since Larry Walker is good in the 3 hole and Jack Cust gets a 7 for hr power but strikes out a ton and therefore bats 5th, it's understandable why the computer would lead off with Helton and bat Payton at cleanup. Maybe the ratings are questionable, but given the ratings that they do have the wisdom of bulldog's point is apparent.

Bottom line is if you have a Lead-off hitter with 40 HR's your team is STACKED!
