The 1962 Mets
As a frustrated Mets fan (I was 10 in 1986) I have set out on my quest to rebuild and start from the beginning. So... I have decided to pick up those pesky Mets in their inaugural season. First and foremost I let the 1961 season play itself out. We are using the rosters from 1961 and will let the rookies enter the draft pool the year they came into the league. Also we have decided to use free agency and the reserve era clause... is kinda whack.
So the season plays out. The Braves beat the Tigers in the World Series. Then the next day the big announcement... the Mets and the Colt 45's will be joining the league in 1961. The Expansion draft was set for mid November which was about 3 days after free agency begins. The amateur draft is set for about a month later in December. So... before I set off on this quest to build the Mets back from the ground up I figured I would have an easier time as free agency would make a player pool available that would normally not be there. This rang true with Frank Robinson, Killebrew, Ernie Banks, and others hitting the market. The problem.. we are an expansion team with a lowly budget. My assumption that I would have some dollars for a free agent or two was misguided. After the 35 round expansion draft, turns out my owner says we are all good.. AKA no $$ to pick any of these guys up. Feeling rebuffed and rejected I have come to the realization that 1962 is going to be a pretty lean year. |

The Team
The 1962 Mets will be headlined by the following players:
1. Jim Perry. A 25 year old who was 16-14 with a WHIP of 1.31 for Cleveland last year. Looks to be our ace. Currently 2.5/2.5 stars 2. Bobby Locke. A 27 year old who was 8-9 for Cleveland last year. A WHIP of 1.41. Looking to be our #2 3. Jose Pagan. Looking to be our lead off hitter and starting short stop. The rest of the team looks to be mediocre at best. Looking to the future there looks there might be a jump in $$ in 1963 as we seem to have a cache ready for free agency after this season. So that's a positive We also had our first year draft. As we had the first pick we landed Ed "Spanky" Kirkpatrick. Young Spanx is a 17 year old catcher who someday strives for 100 home run power. He also plays corner infield and outfield positions. Drafted as a 3 star/ 5 star prospect there is strong talk in the organization to let him fly with the big club on Day 1. More to come. |
