3 Strikes and You're Out

Since OOTP 17 has come out one of my favorite features has been the historical exhibitions. It's so simple to set up, and fun to see the results. From replaying World Series, to replaying what if World Series, to just pitting two teams against each other to see who wins. I recently played out a 1985 "what if" World Series between the Cardinals and the Yankees, and had an exciting seven game series. Game 7, bottom of the ninth with the Yankees trailing 5-2 with the bases loaded and two outs. Don Mattingly steps to the plate and hits a long…out. Ballgame over and the Yankees lose with Mattingly going 1-30 for the series while leaving what seemed like 200 runners on base. Willie McGee hit an impressive 18-26 for the series including two big home runs in Game 7. Those are the breaks though, and anything can happen in a seven game series.

Which brings me to the concept of this dynasty - 3 strikes and You're Out. I'll begin by replaying the World Series, from 1903-2015. I'll be adding in 17 additional series featuring teams that were among the best to not play in a World Series. That will include the 1994 Expos, who never got the opportunity, and teams like the 2001 Mariners. I'll play out the series in exhibition mode, and the losing team in the series will get one strike. After the first round the matchups will be selected randomly. Once a team receives three strikes they're out, and the series will continue until we're down to one final champion.

I plan on beginning with high level recaps, and digging a little bit deeper as the number of teams dwindle. All series will be seven games, with 2 home games, 3 away, and 2 home games. We'll see how things work out, but let the games begin.

Note: While the next post contains the teams I've put placeholders that I'll begin updating with results, so if you want to avoid spoilers you can start following the action here

1903 World Series

The 1903 Americans are the winners of the first matchup, defeating the 1903 Pirates 4 games to 2 and replicating the results of the first World Series. Cy Young won both of his starts for the Americans with Candy LaChance winning series MVP after hitting .375 with one homer and five RBI.

Honus Wagner hit .346 in a losing effort while hitting two homers and driving in 9 runs.

1905 World Series

A Game 1 pitching battle between Rube Waddell and Christy Mathewson only half delivered, with Rube Waddell delivering the first no-hitter of the tournament as the Athletics blew out the Giants 10-0 in Game 1.

The Athletics luck would continue as they got revenge from their 4 games to 1 defeat in the original 1905 World Series. With Rube Waddell pitching a no-hitter and wining both his starts with a 0.50 ERA in 18 innings pitched while striking out 10 he was a no-brainer pick for Series MVP.

The remaining teams making the cut include the following:

1. 1902 Philadelphia Athletics
2. 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates
3. 1904 Boston Americans
4. 1904 New York Giants
5. 1915 Detroit Tigers
6. 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers
7. 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers
8. 1973 Los Angeles Dodgers
9. 1973 Cincinnati Reds
10. 1977 Philadelphia Phillies
11. 1978 Boston Red Sox
12. 1979 Montreal Expos
13. 1982 California Angels
14. 1984 Chicago Cubs
15. 1985 New York Yankees
16. 1987 Toronto Blue Jays
17. 1992 Pittsburgh Pirates
18. 1993 Atlanta Braves
19. 1993 San Francisco Giants
20. 1994 New York Yankees
21. 1994 Montreal Expos
22. 1997 Atlanta Braves
23. 1998 Houston Astros
24. 1988 New York Mets
25. 1999 Texas Rangers
26. 2000 San Francisco Giants
27. 2001 Seattle Mariners
28. 2002 Oakland Athletics
29. 2003 Boston Red Sox
30. 2004 New York Yankees
31. 2005 St Louis Cardinals
32. 2008 Chicago Cubs
33. 2011 Philadelphia Phillies
34. 2012 Washington Nationals

And now's your chance if you want to convince me that another team should be included. I'm not against modifying, or adding as necessary.

I would lobby for two teams
  • 1913 Senators, 2nd place and if for no other reason than it may have been the greatest single season pitching performance in history by Walter Johnson, who deserves a shot at the best in his prime, not the 1924 version alone. Plus one of the premier base stealers in the league in Clyde Milan.
  • The 1922 St Louis Browns, 2nd place and really the best team from the AL St Louis entry whose history is so forlorn that it could only get to the World Series during the WW II years, when AL rosters were decimated by players being in the service. In addition, they were really the second team (after the Yankees) to field such an explosive offense after the deadball era died with the Black Sox scandal, the Ray Chapman death and the emergence of Ruth. Features HOF 1B George Sisler, one of the greatest of all time to never play in a series and potent wing men for Sisler in Ken Williams and Baby Doll Jacobson.

Sounds good. Thanks for the nominations. I've gone ahead and added them to the list.

I'm a little biased, but some of the early 70's Royals were pretty good, especially the 77 team which won 102 games. Brett, White, Otis, Mayberry, Patek, but they couldn't break through the Yankees until the 80's when some players were past their primes. If you want you could add them. Looking forward to this thread, as always with your dynasties!

And for my entertainment, I want to see the 1950 Red Sox, who scored 1027 runs. They only finished 94-68 because of their pitching, but I want to see how they do against more balanced teams. Just a fun thought.

Thank you! I've gone ahead and added both the 77 Royals and 50 Red Sox to the list.

1906 World Series

After going up in the series 3 games to 1 the Cubs lost three straight games to the White Sox, as the Cubs failed to score a single run in the final three games with Doc White, Ed Walsh, and Nick Altrock pitching consecutive shutouts. The White Sox won the original matchup 4 games to 2, but became the first team to win a seven game series.

Doc White was the Series MVP, winning his only start with a 6 hit shutout with one walk and three strikeouts.

1907 World Series

The Chicago Cubs swept the Tigers in the 1907 World series 4 games to none, and it looked like there would be similar results after the Cubs won the first two games, but as the series headed back to Detroit they made it a series, and for the second straight series it would go down to a winner take all Game 7.

The Tigers had a big fourth inning in Game 7, scoring four runs on singles by Davy Jones, Ty Cobb, Claude Rossman, Charley O'Leary, and a double by Boss Schmidt to take a 4-0 lead, and successfully held on as the Cubs came back to make it a game, but fell short 4-3 as Ed Siever won his first game of the series for the Tigers.

Ty Cobb was the Series MVP after hitting .387 with 3 RBI, along with 3 stolen bases.

1908 World Series

For the second straight year the Cubs faced off against the Tigers in the World Series. In real life the Cubs won both of the matchups, with a 4 game to 1 win in 1908.

The Cubs were defeated in seven games last year, but this year the Cubs came out ahead in five games. Mordecai Brown was named Series MVP after winning both of his starts while allowing just 1 earned run while striking out 8 and walking 2.

The 1908 Cubs were the third Cubs team to appear, but the first team to avoid getting their first strike.

With a .421 batting average Claude Rossman sets the new record for highest batting average in a series.

Batting Average
1) Claude Rossman, 1908 Tigers - .421
2) Solly Hoffman, 1907 Cubs - .400
3) Ty Cobb, 1907 Tigers - .387
4) Ty Cobb, 1907 Tigers - .381
5) Candy LaChance, 1903 Americans - .375
6) Ginger Beaumont, 1903 Pirates - .375
7) Danny Hoffman, 1905 Athletics - .375
8) Patsy Dougherty, 1903 Americans - .360
9) Socks Seybold, 1905 Athletics - .350
10) Honus Wagner, 1903 Pirates - .346

1909 World Series

For the third straight year the Tigers appeared in the World Series, and won their second with a 4 games to 2 win over the Pirates. The Pirates were the 4 games to 3 winner in real life, so winners are now 3-3 in the six series that have been played.

The Pirates scored more runs than any team in their 16-2 Game 1 blowout, but couldn't keep up the pace. Ty Cobb was named Series MVP after hitting .500 with a homer and 4 RBI, with 4 stolen bases. His .500 batting average is a new series record.

Bill Abstein had an impressive series for the Pirates hitting .407 with a homer and 5 RBI. One of the cool things about doing the replay is that I'd never heard of him before. 1909 was really his only full year in the majors and he hit .260 with 70 RBI and 51 runs scored. It probably would have been a better story if he helped his team win, but it's always neat to learn something when playing, like the fact that Abstein also played as a midfielder for an amateur soccer club during the offseason. That's your useless fact of the day. He also hit just .231 in the actual World Series.
