Historical Roster Management by AI

I have also submitted this as a bug. Has anyone else seen this with historical or fiction?

I have discovered a fairly major issue with historical roster management by the AI: On some AI managed teams the active MLB rosters are not being filled out completely to 25 players - instead keeping some players (and some good ones) in the minor leagues, especially pitchers. I started an historical league in 1954. I found this issue in mid-May 1954 after seeing that the White Sox beat the Athletics 36-4. The box score shows that the losing pitcher on the Athletics J. Gray pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 22 hits and 19 ER while throwing an amazing 264 pitches. He was relieved by A. Kellner, who pitched the rest of the game (obviously mopping up!). Here is the problem: The Athletics only have 5 pitchers on their active MLB roster and only 19 total players on their total active roster (out of 25). BUT, down in the minor leagues they have 11 pitchers! So, something is obviously wrong with the AI logic. (All other teams have 25 men on their active rosters except for the Orioles who have 21). This is obviously something that needs to be addressed. I am using version 16.2.9. Thanks!

Is there any chance you might have disabled AI roster moves at any point for the affected teams?

I don't remember changing such a setting. Trading is on, etc... But, where is the disable AI roster moves setting?

Thanks!

I have a 16/25 man squad in 1901. 3 pitchers, a CF and a catcher are in the minor leagues. All have been on the active roster at on time or another. The GM bounces them back and forth occasionally. I've lost two pitchers because the GM put them on waivers. A 1B and SP are on the disabled list.

Yet the team has been in first place for half a month and continues to win. All default settings.

I do see the Athletics have moved some pitchers back and forth from the minors to their active roster. But, I still think teams should be required to hold 25 players on their active roster if they have 25 players in their system. Perhaps this can be added as a checkbox option. I just don't think a real GM would only hold 5 pitchers on their active roster for any given game - and then you have a situation where a pitcher has to throw 264 pitches while giving up 19 ER (obviously fatigued!).

Developers- Your thoughts?

Make sure you set "Starters can be used in Relief" to Yes. For the years you are playing right now that is true to history.

Another thing to note is that in 1901 teams used 21-man rosters, not 25. They didn't make the switch to 25 until 1920.

This is 100% true - if the game wasn't rostering players properly, that would be a huge problem. But if that were a problem, I suspect dozens of users would be reporting it. I've never seen this behaviour in the game before, which is the reason I think it's most likely an issue with your setup.

I don't have the game open right now, so someone can correct me here if I'm wrong about where things are located, but I think if you enable Commissioner mode, go to Oakland and click on 'Settings' from their team home page, there will be a checkbox there that says "disable AI roster moves". Make sure that's not checked. It's also possible to disable AI moves globally, in Game Setup, on that page that lists all the functions you can do to your entire league (where you can expand your league, for example), so confirm you haven't disabled AI moves for your entire league as well.

If those aren't causing your issues, I'm not sure what is, but maybe someone else has an idea!

Thanks for the suggestion. But, I know all teams have the ability to make roster moves. The day after the Athletics got beat 36-4 they brought up some minor league relief pitchers to their active roster. (Good move!). So, I'm still looking at a situation where the AI on a couple of teams (Athletics, Orioles) are not completely filling up their active rosters to 25.

Weird. On May 28th 1954 the Athletics recalled many of their players from the minors (many of them relief pitchers), and they now have 25 men on their active roster - including 9 pitchers. I haven't changed any settings since I began the season.

I don't play historical leagues - is there some feature where you can use real life historical transactions? If that's the case, and you are using those, maybe there's an error in the file OOTP is referencing.

If that's not it, I'm out of ideas!
