The worst play-off team EVER !!

I recently started a league with a few tweaks:

The league started in 1919 with four 4-team divisions in both leagues and an inaugural draft - I gave my Brewers the # 1 pick to get Babe Ruth but didn't do anything else to the rosters.

Here is how the standings looked like in 1921 - how are the odds that a division champ loses 98 games ??

That is unreal. Those must have been historically bad teams.

If you're using a balanced schedule with your four-division setup, it's quite possible for a division winner to be terrible in that case.

Sure it's possible - these standings are proof for that

But highly unlikely - and I know that this is not a "real" league, it's just one of my fun leagues. The talent pool of the early 1920's is not nearly big enough to supply 32 teams with enough ML-ready players.

All four teams improved after this low point in franchise history:

Not with a balanced schedule it's not. Those can lead to all kinds of aberrations when divisions are in use.

Assuming a fully balanced schedule (even though it's not actually the case)...

The odds that the four worst teams in a 16-team subleague are all from the same division are 1 in 455.

The odds that four of the five worst teams in a 32-team league are all from the same division are 1 in 1089.70 - wow.

I would say once in 455 seasons does qualify as "unlikely"
