I'd love to see this in OOTP
Something has been bothering me about the way players move around in OOTP. First of all, I noticed that I was able to be super-successful at the game (solo league) while keeping my payroll quite low. I would always trade my hot-shots for young guys with huge potential but who are still making $100,000 a year. Wait a couple of years and repeat the process.
So I am able to win championships and keep payroll at a minimum. The problem is that this doesn’t really reflect reality, and I’m never able to forge that strange bond with a player who you see grow from a green minor-leaguer to a Hall of Famer. In real life, high level players do move from team to team, but it’s usually through free agency rather than trades. So here’s what I’d like to see. Some sort of Fan-Favorite rating on a player. The player gets points for individual and team achievements. Say all players start with a rating of “0”. If a player hits 30 HR, he gets a point. If a pitcher wins 20 games, he gets a point. All players on a World Series winning team get a point. A player who breaks any significant record gets a number of points. Cy Young winner, MVP get points too. Etc. (I have a whole list of thoughts as to what should warrant fan fave status – I’ve been thinking about this for a while). Ideally, these actions and the # of points awarded for them would be customizable. You could also make the # of points needed for a player to become a fan-favorite customizable as well. The points work to add to a team’s Current Fan Interest and/or Fan Loyalty. For instance, the more fan favorites a team has, the higher the fan interest. And if there is a complete fire sale (like the Marlins had after their WS win) it would effect attendance for years to come (as in real life). The difficult part would be to make sure the AI is able to incorporate this into its strategy. But I think this could add to the enjoyment I get from the game and give me reason to try to keep all those expensive veterans that the fans love. Okay, I'm through now.

I think that's a really good idea. I would also like to see a guy who gets more fans interested. IE, Michael Jordan, no matter where he goes he will draw a crowd. Something like that would be neat to see implimented.

Very good idea. The game does become too easy when you can trade you high priced guys for prospects a lot. This would definitrly help to make it harder.

Yeah that's a great idea. We talked about doing something like that in our league, manually. But we never could agree how to work it.

Grand idea if you ask me. Fan favorites can even be players who don't particularly perform well but have that special charisma with the fans that keeps them in certain cities. If it were possible, there could be an impact when a fan favorite who left town through free agency comes back with another team (i.e., home team worked up more, gets a boost from their fans, etc.).
I also wonder how rivalries are considered in the game.

I'm just going to repeat what everyone else has said. Something like this would be a geat addition to OOTP. In real life if a team basiclly gives up and trades their stars and fan favorites attendance will be affect drasticlly, the same should hold true for the OOTP universe.

I like a Baseball-Stars style "prestige" rating. For anyone who remembers baseball stars on the NES, every player had a prestige rating. The combined ratings of the players on your team determined your attendance and therefore income.
Obviously, this is too simple of a system, however, it has its merits. Take players like Deion Sanders, for example. While he was a decent player, he brought a lot more people to the park than comparable players, because he had high "prestige". Prestige is often linked to ability, but not always. And of course, fan loyalty comes into it as well. A player with a lot of "prestige" in one city, might not be nearly as desirable to the fans elsewhere. For example, if John Franco left the Mets and went to say, the Royals, the KC fans wouldn't immediately get behind him, and indeed, they would probably never get behind him to the extent that the NY fans do. Of course, it spoils part of your original idea, since rookies can have plenty of prestige (Everyone wanted to see Kerry Wood pitch in his rookie season, for example), but I guess it instead forces you to take one more factor into account. It's a good idea overall, but those are some suggestions from me on the subject. |

I agree with your thoughts, and by the way, I loved Baseball Stars. Many things can (and should) go into this proposed rating, but some of them are hard to quantify.
My point is that there should be SOMETHING to distinguish between the STARS and the rest. The details are negotiable!

This is a very good idea in my opinion ... That would add a lot to the game and the managing of vets versus rookies etc. Although I don't think all players should start at '0', because it's possible a player could be a fan favorite as a draft pick as well. Ie. A famous college player or player predicted to be the next superstar, taken first overall, will probably have fans warm up to him a lot faster.
But all in all, a tremendous idea... Too bad it's probably too late for v5! |
